STANFORD, CA, July 07, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Michael W. Kirst, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Kirst celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Kirst is an expert in his chosen field, having accumulated almost six decades of experience. Known for his professional longevity, he taught as a professor of education at Stanford University in California from 1969 to 2007. Furthermore, he was the longest serving president of the California State Board of Education, having served two terms between 1977 and 1981, and from 2011 until 2019. Since stepping down from these positions, Dr. Kirst maintains his status with Stanford University as a professor emeritus of education and business administration by courtesy.

Prior to joining the staff at Stanford University, Dr. Kirst held several positions within the U.S. federal government between 1964 and 1969. In that time, he functioned as a budget examiner for the U.S. Budget Bureau, an associate director of the White House Fellows, the director of program planning and evaluation for the Bureau of Elementary and Secondary Education, and a staff director for the U.S. Subcommittee on Manpower. In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Kirst also worked as a principal investigator for Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania. Furthermore, he served as the chairman on the Board of Comparative Studies in Education for the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Kirst's performance in the field was born from his own educational journey, which began with his time at Dartmouth College. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts and graduated, summa cum laude, in 1961. He subsequently attended Harvard University, where he received a Master of Public Administration in 1963 and a PhD in political economy in 1964. In addition to his collegiate credentials, Dr. Kirst has also remained involved with several industry-related organizations, including the Learning Policy Institute in Palo Alto, California, the Board of International Comparative Studies in Education, and the American Education Research Association. During his time at Stanford University, he co-founded Policy Analysis for California Education (PACE) in 1983.

Known also as a prolific writer, Dr. Kirst has authored and edited numerous creative works. These include "Remaking College: The Changing Ecology of Higher Education," "The Political Dynamics of American Education," and "From High School to College: Improving Opportunities for Success in Postsecondary Education." His most recent book, "Higher Education and Silicon Valley: Connected but Conflicted," was published in 2017. Throughout the writing process, he notably collaborated with W. Richard Scott and several other colleagues.

Dr. Kirst has found his career to be the result of various fortunate happenstances. Though he originally intended to dedicate himself completely to working with the federal government, his trajectory turned instead toward the field of education, in which he found much to admire and enjoy. To wit, he is proud of his ability to translate research into policy and his proven record making firm and equitable decisions. In the near future, Dr. Kirst looks forward to continuing his work helping to improve education and policy through his writings and by sharing what he has learned over the course of his life.
