Recently retired after more than 40 years in education, nursing and consulting, Ms. Steckler continues to give back to her industry as an appraiser on behalf of the American Nurse Association's Pathway to Excellence Program. Ms. Steckler notably spent over a decade as an appraiser for the program between 2011 and 2020.
During her lengthy career, Ms. Steckler taught nursing courses at York County Vocational Technical School from 1966 to 1973 and Hamot Medical Center from 1973 until 1975. She also initiated the Associate degree nursing program and taught undergraduate nursing students at Pennsylvania State University. Additionally, Ms. Steckler served as the associate director for the Lake Area Health Education Center, Cooperative Health Education Program at the VA Medical Center in Erie, Pennsylvania. In addition to her success in the classroom, Ms. Steckler devoted more than two decades to the VA Medical Center in various roles, including as an instructional system specialist from 2006 to 2010, and maintained her own consulting company, the Firm of Jessica A. Steckler.
Highly regarded for her expertise, Ms. Steckler was a contributing author of the book, "Transcultural Health Care: A Culturally Competent Approach," 1997, third edition, 2007. Ms. Steckler also contributed articles to various peer-reviewed journals.
A leader in her community, Ms. Steckler was responsible for establishing the Waterford Spiritual Group in 2008. Comprised of a local group of women, they met monthly to work on their self-growth and personal development.
Highly qualified in her field, Ms. Steckler received a diploma from the Bryn Mawr Hospital School of Nursing in 1963, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Millersville State College in 1971. To further her expertise, she earned a Master of Education at Gannon University in 1979. She was also a Pennsylvania State University doctoral candidate in education in 1992. Ms. Steckler holds certification in staff development and continuing education through the American Nurses Association and certification in medical ethics consultation through the University of West Virginia.
To remain aware of developments affecting her field, Ms. Steckler is a professional member of the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association and the American Nurses Association. To commemorate her accomplishments, she received a Recognition Award from the National Nursing Staff Development Organization, a Customer Service Star Award from the Erie VA Medical Center and two Special Contribution Awards from the Veterans Health Administration. Ms. Steckler also received a William A. Nelson Award for Excellence in Health Care Ethics from the Department of Veterans Affairs and was elected to the Erie Hall of Fame.
