Before attaining this role, he served the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Health Sciences University as chief of cardiothoracic surgery from 2015 until 2019 and the University of Texas Medical Branch as the director of the minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic surgery programs and was the co-director of the lung transplantation program from 20 I0 to 2015. Dr. Beckles entered his field as an associate surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Instructor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School in 2007, followed by serving as a cardiothoracic surgeon, assistant professor of cardiothoracic surgery and surgical director of lung transplantation program at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City between 2008 and 2010.
Interested in pursuing medicine from a young age, Dr. Beckles migrated from Trinidad in the Caribbean and initially earned a Bachelor of Science from Stony Brook University in New York, later earning a Master of Science from the same institution in 1994. He subsequently earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1997, completed his general surgery internship. residency and chief residency along with completing a Doctor of Philosophy in molecular biology in 2004, all from SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Brooklyn, New York. Demonstrating his commitment to his professional pursuits, Dr. Beckles completed a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas in 2007 and a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery from Harvard Medical School in 2008. Passionate about cultivating a peaceful and effective environment through his work, Dr. Beckles is especially proud of his directorship and leadership accomplishments providing clinical excellence, education and innovation in the field of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. His team recently elevated the quality of an open-heart surgery program attaining its first three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for overall patient care and outcomes in coronary artery bypass grafting procedures.
To commemorate his accomplishments, Dr. Beckles has been recognized with numerous awards, including alpha omega alpha (AOA), a silver level Lung Transplant Award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration, a New York City Department of Education Recognition Award from Mount Sinai Medical Center and a Golden Apple Teaching Award from the State University of New York Downstate Medical University. He has also been honored in the Consumers Research Council of America's Guide as one of America's Top Surgeons and as one of Houstonia's Top Doctors in Houstonia Magazine. His research has been awarded US Patents, book chapters, basic science and clinical publications. Known for his contributions as a civic-minded citizen, Dr. Beckles currently serves as Chief Medical Officer for a New York non-profit organization and his research has raised money from philanthropy in the form of academic endowments.
