An expert in computational catalysis and dynamic catalysis science, Dr. Grabow has been a dedicated educator for more than 15 years. Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, he earned a diploma in chemical engineering from the University of Stuttgart in Germany in 2003. He subsequently attained a Doctor of Philosophy in chemical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2008. While pursuing his education, he began his career as an undergraduate student researcher for the University of Stuttgart in 2000. Following this appointment, he served as a research assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Madison between 2001 and 2002. He underwent an internship with Aventis Pharma Deutschland GmbH in 2002 and then resumed working as a research assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Madison until his graduation in 2008.
Dr. Grabow completed a post-doctoral program at the Technical University of Denmark in 2010 and became a research associate for Stanford University the same year. He continued his career in 2011 as an assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering for the University of Houston. In 2014 he accepted a courtesy appointment in the Department of Chemistry and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2017.
In 2019, Dr. Grabow was honored with the Dan Luss Professorship and was promoted to full professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and chemistry in 2020. In this capacity, he teaches both undergraduate and graduate students in a variety of courses related to engineering, including mathematics, analytical methods, numerical and statistical methods, thermodynamics, reaction kinetics and fundamentals of catalysis. He also conducts research and advises a group of several doctoral and postdoctoral students on a research project funded externally by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy, and industry.
To remain aware of developments affecting his field, Dr. Grabow is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society, the North American Catalysis Society, the Southwest Catalysis Society, and the International Precious Metals Institute. Among other service appointments, he served as chairman of the Southwest Catalysis Society and chairman for the Catalysis and Reaction Engineering Division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Throughout his professional life, Dr. Grabow has been recognized multiple times for his expertise. He received the Young Scientist Award in 2012 at the 15th International Congress on Catalysis, and was presented with a Teaching Excellence Award by the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston in 2014. That year, he received the prestigious Early Career Award by the U.S. Department of Energy and a National Science Foundation CAREER Award. In 2018, he was elected into the Class of Influential Researchers by Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research.
