Dr. Martinez taught in the College of Education at the University of New Mexico (UNM) from 1986 until 2012.
ALBUQUERQUE, NM, July 12, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joseph G. R. Martinez, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
At St. Mary's High School, 1964-1968, he studied Classical Studies in Religion and Theology, Literature, and the Latin Language, having learned in the fifth grade the very essence of Christianity.
Dr. Martinez taught in the College of Education at the University of New Mexico (UNM) from 1986 until 2012. Now retired, he holds the title of Regents' Professor after leaving his full-time professorship in 2012. At UNM, he taught graduate-level statistics at the main campus and math courses like calculus I at the UNM-Valencia Campus, as well as courses in learning theory, human growth and development, mathematics education courses at the middle and secondary levels, research design topics, and statistical analysis at the graduate level. Either as the chair of the graduate student's doctoral dissertation, or the research specialist of the dissertation, he helped other committee members guide graduate students toward their successful completion of ¾ of 100 dissertations. Only 15 other dissertations were not completed.
Earlier in his career, he taught mathematics at the University of Albuquerque, between 1982 and 1985, where his wife, Dr. Nancy Martinez, was his boss, the Dean of the College of General Studies, who enjoyed her position immensely. He also taught mathematics at the University of New Mexico-Valencia between 1985 and 1986, and from 1978 until 1979 he was the director of the reading laboratory at the University of Albuquerque. Dr. Martinez also proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1964 to 1968. During his last year of active duty in the Marine Corps, Sergeant Jose G. R. Martinez was nominated for the highest award within the Corps, Marine of the Year. He refused it because he did not experience actual combat in Viet Nam.
Realizing that he had an aptitude for algebra as well as for teaching at a young age, Dr. Martinez went on to earn impressive academic credentials. Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in English from the University of New Mexico (UNM) in 1973. To further his expertise, he received a Doctor of Philosophy from the same institution in 1980. He counts among his mentors Dr. Wayne Moellenberg who assisted him in securing a campus professorship in 1986 despite certain barriers. Dr. Martinez also acknowledges the positive influence of his wife of 50 years, Nancy, and his own unfailing desire to succeed and see every endeavor through to its fruition.
Dr. Martinez counts his doctoral dissertation as the highlight of his academic work thus far. The project focused on measuring perception and conception among speed readers, and the final document was nominated for the Popejoy Dissertation Prize, a coveted award among doctoral candidates at UNM. Under the guidance of Dr. Peder J. Johnson of the Department on Psychology at UNM, Dr. Martinez and Dr. Johnson co-authored the published version of the dissertation in Reading Research Quarterly in 1982. Looking toward the future, Dr. Martinez plans to continue his record of scholarly achievement by submitting new research findings for publication.
