Dr. Akinremi is an associate professor with expertise in cardiopulmonary physical therapy at Hampton University in Virginia. He was the head of the Physiology Department and an associate professor of physiotherapy in the College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences at Fiji National University. Other past appointments include a faculty position at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan in Ibadan, Nigeria, from 2012 until 2015, and as an adjunct lecturer in the College of Health Sciences at Bowen University in Iwo, Nigeria, between 2011 and 2012. He was also the acting physiotherapy department head and principal physiotherapist at Bowen University Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso, Nigeria, from 2011 to 2012. Moreover, from 1999 until 2015, he served in consultancy roles and as a physiotherapist at various institutions across Nigeria, including the Jos University Teaching Hospital and Faith Alive Hospital. Dr. Akinremi was also appointed to administrative posts, including personnel manager, head of the Community Health Service Department and project coordinator of the President's Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR) Project at the Faith Alive Foundation from 2007 until 2008.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Akinremi earned a Bachelor of Science in physiotherapy from the University of Ibadan in 1999 and subsequently a Master of Science in human physiology from the University of Jos in 2007. Dr. Akinremi continued his academic pursuits at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in cardiopulmonary physiotherapy in 2013, where he was the first to earn a doctorate in the field at this premier institution. To further his expertise, he also earned a master's of health sciences degree in clinical investigation from Johns Hopkins University in 2018.
Dr. Akinremi's training and certifications demonstrate a broad range of professional and academic interests. He was certified in 2021 by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) as a cardiac rehabilitation professional, and he had an obesity specialist certification from SCOPE, a designation he earned in 2016. He is also licensed or registered to practice physical therapy in 4 countries (The Republic of Ireland, The United States of America, Nigeria, and Fiji Islands). Dr. Akinremi is also proud to have received the International Trainee Scholarship from the American Thoracic Society in 2016. He is one of the first three to obtain the HERMIS Spirometry License by the European Respiratory Society in Africa in 2015.
Through conference presentations and journal articles, Dr. Akinremi contributes scholarly output in his field. His article entitled "Delphi panelists for a core outcome set project suggested both new and existing dissemination strategies that were feasibly implemented by a research infrastructure project" was published in 2019 in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology Journal. He is co-author of "Association between participant contact attempts and reports of being bothered in a national, longitudinal cohort study of ARDS survivors" in the CHEST in 2020. Additionally, Dr. Akinremi has authored a book titled "Success Unlimited! How to Recalibrate Your Mind for Predictable and Repeatable Success," published through WestBow Press in 2022.
Dr. Akinremi's most notable achievement was his work in Fiji Islands, where he helped elevate the profession by leading efforts to revamp the Bachelor in Physiotherapy curriculum, establish research agenda, and mentor trainees and students in research, and develop a postgraduate physiotherapy training program, among others. Dr. Akinremi has also generously dedicated time to the Ministry of Health of the Fiji Islands by playing a critical consultancy role in chronic cardio-respiratory disease prevention issues, as well as initiating programs that were disseminated across the island. Based on the success of these efforts, he was invited to the Presidential Villa by the President of Fiji in 2016.
Dr. Akinremi gives credit to his faith for all of his outstanding achievements in the field. He is also grateful for the support of his family and equally proud of his wife, an educator, and of his childrens' many professional and academic accomplishments thus far. He plans to persist in supporting all of their aspirations. Looking toward the future, he has several project plans in place, one of which is to offer pro bono spirometry services and training to low-income communities. He continues to pursue external grants to support lung function evaluations that will aid in the early detection of chronic pulmonary diseases among minority populations.
