As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

An Estonian immigrant. Mr. Maldre and his mother left Germany in 1950 to come to the United States. Due to the lack of day care centers at the lime, he spent his days at the Norwegian Lutheran Children's Home while his mother worked. Due to his personal experiences, he became involved in the arts, specifically photography. After earning a bachelor's degree in design from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1969, Mr. Maldre received a Master of Science degree from the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1972, where he studied with Aaron Siskind, Arthur Siegel and Charles Swedlund.

Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Maldre gained valuable expertise in the arts as a lab assistant in the College of Art and Architecture at the University of Illinois, Chicago, with the Illinois Arts Council's Visual Arts Advisory Panel and Exhibition Development Panel, and as a photographer for Midway Review magazine. Likewise, he served as a photographer and lab technician for Encyclopedia Britannica, a photography teacher in the School of Arts at the Beverly Art Center in Chicago, and as a professor of art and photography at Chicago State University before earning emeritus status in 2007.

Drawing on years of professional expertise, Mr. Maldre presently excels as a board member of the Walter Burley Griffin Society of America and the Ridge Historical Society, and as a photographer for the Beverly Area Planning Association. Additionally, he has had his work showcased in a range of solo and group exhibitions through the Beverly Arts Center, the Ridge Historical Society, the Illinois State Museum, the MacNider Art Museum, the Norton Simon Museum, the International Venice Architecture Biennial, the Power House Museum in Sydney, Australia, the University of Melbourne, Australia, Illinois Bell Gallery and the Art Institute of Chicago. Mr. Maldre has had his work held in the collection of numerous organizations such as the Australian National Museum and Library, the National Gallery of Canada, the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House, the Illinois State Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Outside of his main career path, Mr. Maldre serves as committee chair of the Historic Buildings and Save the Pike House initiative through the Ridge Historical Society and works with the Beverly Area Planning Association. Due to his considerable knowledge, he has photographed for several books, including "The Chicago Bungalow," "Arts and Crafts Design in America," "Walter Burley Griffin in America" and "The Griffins in Australia and India." Similarly, Mr. Maldre has been commissioned by several institutions such as the Beverly Area Planning Association, the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Chicago Architecture Foundation.

To commemorate his accomplishments, Mr. Maldre has received grants through the National Endowment for the Arts, the Graham Foundation for the Fine Arts, Chicago State University and the Illinois Humanities and Arts Council. In a career filled with highlights, he is most proud of writing and publishing the book "Walter Burley Griffin in America" along with Professor Paul Kruty, helping to restore his Walter Burley Griffin designed house to its original appearance and getting the Pike House recognized as one of the Five Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois in 2022. Looking toward the future, Mr. Maldre intends to continue sharing his passion for photography with others and fostering his new interest in taking pictures of storefront traditional churches. He would also like to be featured in additional exhibitions at the Beverly Arts Center and the Ridge Historical Society as well as the Walter Burley Griffin Societies of Australia and America.
