Mr. Butikofer has enjoyed a fulfilling career, having served and volunteered with the U.S. Navy for 20 years. He previously served as a Surface Warfare Officer from 1997 to 2017, where he led and managed diverse teams of enlisted specialists, trained naval personnel, maintained battleship systems and equipment, and participated in disaster and humanitarian relief efforts. Since retiring in 2017, he has operated as a senior naval science instructor for the Providence Hall High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program. In this role, Mr. Butikofer trains high school cadets in civics, discusses the U.S. Constitution, and teaches health-related topics, such as physical fitness and first aid.
Prior to embarking on his naval career, Mr. Butikofer attended Utah State University between 1991 and 1995, in which time he received both a bachelor's degree in communicative disorders and a master's degree in speech-language pathology. In 2002, he received a master's degree in national security affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School. For his extensive military service, Mr. Butikofer has been awarded with numerous commendations, including the Meritorious Service Medal, a Navy/Marine Commendation Medal with two stars, a National Defense Service Medal, and a Global War on Terror Service Medal.

Between 2015 and 2017, he participated as an area representative for the Combined Federal Campaign. Furthermore, alongside his continual professional duties, Mr. Butikofer has volunteered as a religious leader at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1991.
