HINDMAN, KY, July 14, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- William Robert "Bill" Weinberg has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dedicated to improving the quality of life for people living in the Appalachian region, Mr. Weinberg has distinguished himself as a skilled attorney and civic advocate for more than 50 years. To prepare for his career, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and history from Randolph-Macon College in 1963 and a Juris Doctor from Tulane University Law School in 1966. He subsequently completed coursework in regional economic development at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in 1971. While pursuing his education, he began his career in 1967 as a staff attorney for the Roanoke Valley Legal Aid Society, the first legal aid program in Virginia. During this time, he also functioned as an assistant to the director for the Total Action Against Poverty Roanoke Community Action Agency.
Following his academic achievements, Mr. Weinberg was a professor and project director for the Appalachian Oral History Project and an assistant to the dean of academic affairs at Alice Lloyd College from 1971 to 1975. That year, he became an attorney and partner for Weinberg and Pratt. He later was managing partner for Weinberg, Campbell, Slone and Slone, PSC, where he practiced law until 2002. In 1996 he was selected as a Visiting Fellow in creative writing at Harvard University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and took a year sabbatical from the practice of law.
Mr. Weinberg became President of Clean Gas, Inc. in 1997 and continues to hold that position. Clean Gas, Inc. is an Eastern Kentucky natural gas exploration and management company that drills natural gas wells and manages smaller gas companies. In 2009 Mr. Weinberg and his family, along with others, purchased the local community bank, the Bank of Hindman. Mr. Weinberg serves as President of the bank's holding company, Community Exchange BancShares.
Mr. Weinberg has written for numerous publications and has published two books. He and his co-editor, Laurel Shackleford, received the 1977 Weatherford Award for the outstanding publication of the year concerning the Appalachian area for "Our Appalachia: An Oral History", published by Hill & Wang. In 2018 the Lisbon Press published Mr. Weinberg's book of short stories, "Troublesome Creek and Beyond". Other publications include "Judicare in America" in the American Bar Association, "The Cost of Foreign Private Investment" in Civilisations; "The Conduct and Misconduct of Foreign Affairs" in Worldview. Throughout the course of his professional journey, Mr. Weinberg has also served in a number of civil leadership roles. He was a State Representative from 1978 to 1982, during which time he was selected by the Press Corps as the Outstanding First Year Legislator in the Kentucky General Assembly in 1980. He was also elected as a delegate representing Kentucky to the Democratic National Conventions in 1976, 1988, 1996 and 2004. He was chairman of the East Kentucky Leadership Foundation for seven years. He was a member of the Kentucky State Board of Education for four years. He is past chairman of the Appalachian Artisan Center and continues to serve on its board. He is currently chairman of the Board of Directors for the Hazard Community and Technical College.
