Well-regarded for his expertise in the health care field, Dr. Falcone brings more than 50 years of industry experience to his current position as chief executive officer of the Columbus Medical Association and Affiliates. Serving in this role since 2016, he has championed physician-led initiatives to improve the health of their patients and the Columbus community. In addition to his main vocation, Dr. Falcone is a talented artist and recording musician who has been creating music and visual art since the 1960s.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Falcone earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, magna cum laude, from Kent State University in 1971. He subsequently enrolled at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, obtaining a Doctor of Medicine in 1973. He completed his internship and surgical residency at Riverside Methodist Hospital in 1981 and proceeded to hold clinical positions in trauma and surgical critical care for two decades. However, having witnessed the stress that a lifelong career as a surgeon had on many of his colleagues, Dr. Falcone decided to pursue a career in medical administration when he reached the age of 45.
A highly respected leader in the Ohio medical community, Dr. Falcone has recently held positions as vice president of clinical policy and population health for the Ohio Hospital Association, chief of staff of the Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center, chief of staff of the Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Center, and acting chief of staff for the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. Previously, he served as president and chief operating officer for Grant Medical Center, a 640-bed urban teaching hospital and Level 1 trauma center in Columbus. Among his many career accomplishments, Dr. Falcone is especially proud of his role in establishing the Central Ohio Trauma System (COTS), a group of physicians, health care professionals and other experts who collaborate to improve health and safety in the Columbus region.
A prolific writer and speaker, Dr. Falcone has authored 91 peer-reviewed publications and 35 books, in addition to book chapters and monographs, and he has delivered more than 150 national and international presentations on the topics of trauma and critical care. As a musician, he has produced multiple music albums and LPs. Dr. Falcone is a diplomat with the American Board of Surgery, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and a member of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. Previously, he has served as president of the COTS board of trustees, chair of the Ohio Committee on Trauma and president of the Ohio chapter of the American College of Surgeons. To commemorate his many accomplishments, Dr. Falcone has received numerous awards, including the James Fairchild Baldwin Award from the Grant Medical Center, a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Ohio State University and a Distinguished Physician Award from the Air Medical Physician Association.
Outside of his main career path, Dr. Falcone enjoys oil painting and making sound installations, projects that he looks forward to experiencing further in his retirement. Additionally, he serves as a board member of the Columbus College of Art and Design, from which be obtained a Master of Fine Arts in visual art in 2016, and the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts.
