A premier facility that serves the Greater Boston area, her organization specializes in the diagnosis of fetal, maternal and gynecological conditions, which include obstetrical sonography, amniocentesis, gynecological/pelvic ultrasound, sonohysterography and abdominal and renal ultrasound. Additionally, Dr. Benacerraf has served as a staff radiologist and consultant in obstetrical ultrasound in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Brigham and Women's Hospital since 1985.
As an experienced educator, Dr. Benacerraf has been a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive biology at Harvard University Medical School since 1993 and a clinical professor of radiology since 1994. Aligned with the prestigious institution since 1981, she has also been instrumental as the director of the advanced sonography symposium in obstetrics and gynecology at both Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital since 1987. Additionally, Dr. Benacerraf taught at Brigham & Women's Hospital during the early 1980s.
Among Dr. Benacerraf's many noteworthy accomplishments in the field, she was responsible for revolutionizing obstetrical ultrasound during the late 1980s, which helped determine if a fetus in utero has the risk of having Down Syndrome using ultrasound. Although it is not a definitive test, Dr. Benacerraf notes that it does narrow down which patients require an invasive test for a more accurate determination.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Benacerraf has contributed to and has served in various editorial positions for a multitude of scholarly journals, including the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine from 2000 to 2010 as the editor-in-chief. Dr. Benacerraf also authored the medical textbook, Clinics in Diagnostic Ultrasound, in 1988.
Dr. Benacerraf studied at Barnard College where she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1971. She was subsequently accepted to Harvard University where she attained a Doctor of Medicine in 1976. Additional educational pursuits to her credit include an internship at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, a residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and a fellowship in ultrasound and computed tomography at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. Benacerraf has been a licensed physician in the state of Massachusetts since 1978 and board-certified through the American Board of Radiology since 1980.
A respected member of several industry-related organizations, Dr. Benacerraf is an elected fellow of the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound and the American College of Radiology. She is also an associate fellow of the Boston Obstetrical Society, an associate member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a member and former board of director of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and, among others, a member of the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound. Moreover, Dr. Benacerraf is an honorary member of the Chicago Radiological Society.
To commemorate her accomplishments, Dr. Benacerraf was the recipient of a Giant in Obstetrics and Gynecology Award from the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2021, a Joseph H. Holmes Pioneer Award from the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine in 2008 and the Lawrence Mack Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound in 2002. Among others, Dr. Benacerraf was honored with the Ian Donald Gold Medal from the International Society of Ultrasound in OBGYN in 2001 as only the second female to ever receive the award.
