Dr. Johnson is a professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, which he joined in 2010. He crafts and delivers lectures to medical students, residents, and fellows, and he directs and conducts research. His main area of focus is measuring pressure and flow in the heart to diagnose and subsequently deliver personalized treatment. Dr. Johnson actively cares for patients in both clinic and hospital settings.
With a superior academic record and ample certifications, Dr. Johnson is well-regarded in the cardiology field. He completed residency and fellowships at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. Dr. Johnson is board-certified in cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, and nuclear cardiology. He attributes his professional direction to the influence of Dr. Lance Gould, a well-known cardiologist who offered him a summer internship 25 years ago. He also includes as a mentor Dr. Nico Pijls, who developed the foundational tool of fractional flow reserve and invited Dr. Johnson to live and work in the Netherlands during a sabbatical year in 2015/16.
As a prolific researcher and scholar, Dr. Johnson has over 150 publications to his credit, including several co-authored with his father. He relies on a broad network of colleagues as a fellow with both the American College of Cardiology and the European Society of Cardiology. Levine Young Clinical Investigator from the American Heart Association. During training Dr. Johnson also won the Rambach Award from Northwestern University in 2005. He is highly coveted as a presenter, having been invited to lecture in 19 countries across four continents.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Johnson continues to expand the scope and reach of cardiac positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. He believes that we should bring a wide range of tools to bear on clinical problems, rather than overemphasizing any single method. Dr. Johnson hopes to continue to learn from patients in his practice, transforming today's problems into tomorrow's solutions.
