Prior to embarking on her professional journey, she pursued an education at Loyola University Maryland, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1972. She continued her education at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, a teaching hospital, earning a Master of Science in pathology in 1975, and subsequently a Doctor of Philosophy in pharmacology and molecular sciences from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1992. As a commitment to her field, Dr. Woods has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the Executive Advisory Board for the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics Division of Neonatology, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, the Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities, the American Chemical Society and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Dr. Woods began her vocation as a chemistry associate for the clinical chemistry laboratory at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1969, where she remained until 1972. Between 1973 and 1979, she garnered expertise at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore initially as a supervisor of the enzymology laboratory, then as a teaching assistant of the chemistry department aat University of Maryland College Park, and finally as a laboratory scientist at the clinical chemistry laboratory. Since 1979, Dr. Woods has built a prolific career at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in a variety of roles, including as a laboratory coordinator and supervisor for the division of clinical pharmacology, a post-doctoral fellow and research associate for the oncology immunology department, and an adjunct assistant, associate and most recently, an adjunct professor at the department of pharmacology and molecular sciences.
During this period, Dr. Woods also contributed to the Taipei Medical University as a visiting professor from 2010 until 2013, and a director of the structural biology unit for the Intramural Research Program, the NIDA and the NIH, between 1999 and 2021. In her career related endeavors, she has authored numerous scholastic articles, over 18,000 scholarly citations, presented at various conferences and has obtained multiple patents. Well-regarded for her contributions to the field, Dr. Woods has received multiple awards, including numerous NIDA Paper of the Month awards, the Investigator Recipient of the Woman Scientist Achievement Award from the NIH and the NIDA in 2011, and the Acknowledgement for Contributions in Developing the Field award from the American Society for Mass Spectrometry in 2021.
