Drawing on over five decades of diverse expertise, Mr. Haugo specializes in landscape design and military outreach. Prior to embarking on his professional journey, he pursued an education at the University of Iowa, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in education in 1970. As a commitment to his field, Mr. Haugo has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the Iowa Alumni Association, the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association, the University of Iowa Letterman's Club, the Blue Devil Association and the National Museum of the United States Army, to only name a few.
Mr. Haugo began his 40-year career as a landscape designer and a project manager and completed his career at Bachman's Landscaping from 1985 to 2016. During this time, he was also active as a volunteer Army Reserve Ambassador for the state of Minnesota, where he represented the State of Minnesota in a public forum by relaying details of the Army Reserves to employers, families and businesses as required for over 18 years. He also proactively provided information to the units and soldiers regarding newly implemented programs and policies. Additionally, he served as an Infantry lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve, before retiring as a full Colonel and the Chief of Staff for the 88th United States Army Reserve Regional Readiness Command in 2000.
Since 2017, Mr. Haugo has found much success as a volunteer Military Outreach Director for the Minnesota-ESGR Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. In this capacity, he is responsible for overseeing more than 150 units for the seven Reserve services in the State of Minnesota, which include the United State Air Force Reserve, the Air National Guard Reserve, the Coast Guard Reserve, the Marine Corps Reserve, the Navy Reserve, the Army Reserve and the Army National Guard. In addition, he holds annual discussions with soldiers regarding their rights under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), and ensures that the rights of Reserve soldiers' are not violated while they are deployed under the USERRA act.
Well regarded for his contributions to the field, Mr. Haugo has received multiple awards, including 11 landscape design awards from the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association, four Honor Awards and seven Merit Awards, in addition to a Minnesota Landscape Association Committee Member of the Year Award in 2008, for his involvement in rewriting the MNLA certification manual for landscaping. Long dedicated to civic advocacy, he has volunteered his time and services as a veteran advocate, a board member for the Armed Forces Service Center to the United Veterans Legislative Council, and a member of Congressman Dean Phillips (MN-03) Veterans Council.
Among his professional accomplishments, Mr. Haugo is most proud of his ability to have risen in the ranks in the armed forces, through which he oversaw 20,000 soldiers as the Chief of Staff of the 88th United States Army Reserve Regional Readiness Command in Minneapolis, with a $250 million budget for a program operating from six to 19 states. Additionally, he is gratified by his work as a Military Outreach Director for the State of Minnesota. Mr. Haugo attributes much of his success to his hard work, communication and problem solving skills, as well as to his ability to follow guidance and orders for good recommendations.
