Drawing on over a decade of expertise in academia, Ms. Schoolland specializes in music education and small band programs. Prior to embarking on her professional journey, she pursued an education at Fort Lewis College, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in music education in 2011. As a commitment to her field, Ms. Schoolland is certified in music performance and has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the Alaska Music Educators Association and the National Association for Music Education.
Ms. Schoolland began her career as a horn quartet facilitator and a studio manager for the music department at Fort Lewis College from 2007 to 2010, while concurrently serving as a solo and an ensemble adjudicator at Farmington Municipal Schools in 2008, and a private brass instructor at Katzin Music from 2007 until 2010. She continued her vocation in a similar capacity as a long-term music substitute teacher at Durango 9R School District in 2010, a student teacher at Pleasant View Middle School in 2011, and a music teacher at Columbian Elementary School between 2011 and 2013.
From 2013 to 2018, Ms. Schoolland was active as a music teacher at Sierra Vista Elementary School, while also contributing to Junior Strings of Pueblo County as a founder and director from 2015 until 2018. Since 2018, she has found much success as a music director at the Annette Island School District. In this capacity, she is responsible for directing the high school concert band, the high school concert choir, the high school and middle school computer coding classes, the middle school concert beginning band, the PEP Club and the after-school band, in addition to serving on the arts committee for their district.
Adjacent to her primary career efforts, Ms. Schoolland has performed as a horn player with various bands throughout the years, including the Durango Youth Symphony, the Music in the Mountains Educational Brass Quintet, the Fort Lewis College Brass Quintet, Horn Quartet and Symphonic Band, the Rocky Mountain Wind Symphony, the Southern Colorado Community Band and the Pueblo Symphony, among others. Well regarded for her contributions to the field, she has received multiple awards, including the Colorado Outstanding Young Music Educator award in 2017, and the Yamaha's 40 Under 40 Music Educators award in 2022.
Among her professional accomplishments, Ms. Schoolland is most proud of reviving the music program at the Annette Island School District, where she achieved nearly quadruple the amount of participants in band and received superior ratings at the most recent concert. She attributes much of her success to her ability to form positive relationships with her students, and to Kerry Sweet-Seip, who has mentored and supported her in all of her endeavors.
