Drawing on over a decade of expertise in the field of medicine, Dr. Gilbert specializes in pediatric rheumatology. Prior to embarking on her professional journey, she pursued an education at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in biology in 2001. She continued her academic efforts at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology and immunology in 2007, and a Doctor of Medicine in 2009. To remain aware of developments affecting her field, Dr. Gilbert has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Rheumatology, the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance, the Medical University of South Carolina Black Faculty Group, the Pediatric Rheumatology Care and Outcomes Improvement Network and the Palmetto Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association.
Dr. Gilbert began her career in health care as a pediatric resident at the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System from 2009 to 2012. Subsequently, she garnered expertise as a pediatric rheumatology fellow at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, between 2012 and 2015. Since then, she has found much success at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. In this capacity, she is responsible for treating children with joint pain, arthritis, lupus, dermatomyositis, scleroderma, vasculitis, periodic fever syndrome and scleroderma. Additionally, Dr. Gilbert contributes to the hospital's Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children associated with COVID-19 (MIS-C) multidisciplinary team and participates in lupus and juvenile arthritis advocacy and research.
To commemorate her accomplishments, Dr. Gilbert has received multiple awards, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award from the University of South Carolina Black History Intercollegiate Consortium in 2022, the "Lift As You Climb" Diversity Mentorship Faculty Award from the College of Medicine in 2001, and the Outstanding Elective Rotation for Pediatric Rheumatology from the Pediatric Residency Program, to only name a few. In her career related endeavors, she serves as Assistant Dean for Resident and Faculty Inclusion for the College of Medicine, Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Residency Program, Director of Diversity and Inclusion for the Pediatrics Department, and Medical Director of Diversity and Inclusion for the Children's and Women's Hospital at MUSC. Additionally, she has contributed over 90 scholarly and creative productions in her field. Looking toward the future, Dr. Gilbert aspires to work with different departments in the College of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina and hopes to help create and explore a more inclusive and diverse environment in health care, thereby addressing health disparities for the underserved in the community.
