Originally intent on becoming a journalist or a novelist, Dr. Rosenstone earned a Bachelor of Arts and a master's degree in journalism from the University of California, Los Angeles. Subsequently, he decided to pursue a career in academia and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in history from his alma mater in 1965. After a year at the University of Oregon, he spent the rest of his career at the California Institute of Technology, where he became an emeritus professor in 2012.
Over the years, Dr. Rosenstone has authored seventeen books, including works of history, biography, criticism, and fiction. Among them: "Crusade of the Left: The Lincoln Battalion and the Spanish Civil War," "Romantic Revolutionary: A Biography of John Reed," "Mirror in the Shrine: American Encounters in Meiji Japan," "Visions of the Past: The Challenge of Film to Our Idea of History," "History on Film / Film on History," "The Man Who Swam into History," and "Adventures of a Postmodern Historian: Living and Writing the Past." Works of Dr. Rosenstone have been translated into thirteen foreign languages. Dr. Rosenstone has obtained several fellowships through the Fulbright Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and has served as a visiting professor at several universities: Oxford, St Andrews, Kyushu University, Tolima University in Colombia, the University of Barcelona, and the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. He has worked as a historical consultant for several films, including the Oscar-winning "Reds."
Dr. Rosenstone has over the years served on several committees of the American Historical Association. His accomplishments have brought him awards: The Silver Medal Award from the Commonwealth Club of California and the Book of the Year Award through the Spanish journal, Film Historia. His first novel, "King of Odessa," was acknowledged in the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers program. In a career filled with highlights, he is particularly proud of co-founding the journal, Rethinking History, devoted to innovative and nontraditional methods of writing history.
