As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Following the conclusion of his career in civil and soil engineering, Mr. Shookman sought a different line of work. Supported by his varied experience, he excels as an environmental health science specialist and certified industrial hygienist for Hydro-Gear, where he audits safety programs to ensure that machines remain up-to-date, monitors operators for noise exposure, performs mineral sampling and screens chemical products, among numerous other duties.
During an earlier stage of his career, Mr. Shookman maintained a great variety of roles in the field. In addition to his involvement with a construction project for the Holcim Group, he taught environmental safety and OSHA compliance courses for several companies in St. Louis, Missouri, worked for an engineering consultancy in Mattoon, Illinois, and maintained a consultancy in Lafayette, Indiana. Additionally, Mr. Shookman worked as an industrial hygienist for BP plc, the Amoco Corporation and the Shell Oil Refinery Los Angles and at Argonaut Insurance Company.
A certified industrial hygienist and certified safety professional, Mr. Shookman holds a bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University. In a career that has been filled with highlights, Mr. Shookman is most proud to have worked on behalf of BP in Alaska's Prudhoe Bay Oil Field, largely due to the complex and isolated working environment. He is also gratified to have served at International Comfort Products, where he was able to reduce the recordable accident rate by 46 percent, and at Hydro-Gear, where he kept welding fume exposure within safety limits. In accounting for his success, he credits his innate curiosity and ability to communicate well with others across all levels of his profession.
