Originally intent on pursuing a career in health, diversity, equity, and inclusion, Dr. Stoney's career aspirations changed during high school. Her coach and physical education teacher asked her to teach a student who was visually impaired to jump hurdles. Although she saw the task as challenging, she did as asked. Once the student finally cleared the hurdles, she saw his face light up and knew from that moment that she wanted to be a teacher. Upon earning her bachelor's degree in special education and health from the University of Texas at El Paso, Dr. Stoney began her career in coaching at the collegiate level and eventually was a middle school teacher in Corpus Christi, Texas.
During the early stages of her career, Dr. Stoney gained valuable expertise in physical education at the University of Texas at El Paso, where she worked as a graduate assistant and assistant coach for the women's basketball team. Likewise, she worked as a teacher in the physical education department at Texas A&M University at Kingsville and in the special education department at the University of Texas at Austin. Drawing on her considerable experience, she presently excels as an associate professor at Kansas State University. Since joining the university in 1999, Dr. Stoney has also served as the interim chief diversity and inclusion officer and the faculty athletics representative for athletics.
An expert in her field, Dr. Stoney holds a master's degree in kinesiology from the University of Texas at El Paso and a doctorate degree in special and multicultural education from the University of Texas at Austin. In conjunction with her work, she has also contributed to her community as a member of the Riley County Law Board and through her dedication to the No Stone Unturned Foundation. This 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization provides direction, funding, and care for children with various disabilities. To commemorate her accomplishments, Dr. Stoney received the Golden Nugget Award through the College of Education and was the first female to be honored as a Hall of Fame basketball athlete at the University of Texas at El Paso.
In a career filled with highlights, Dr. Stoney is most proud of working with Kansas State University's pre-service teachers, who are students seeking to become better physical education teachers. Supported by her extensive knowledge and experience, she helps them understand how to work with a diverse student body. Looking toward the future, Dr. Stoney intends to make positive changes and pursue more work in unique and physical education.
