Cameron always takes as much time as is needed to counsel his patients through their condition
SAN DIEGO, CA, July 29, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Cameron DeVany has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Cameron DeVany is a Speech Pathologist with Scripps Health, initially hired in 2018. Prior to his professional career, Cameron attended the University of Connecticut, initially planning on pursuing an engineering career. However, when taking a general education course introducing him to the field of speech pathology, a field combining his interest in neuroscience and language opened before him. He changed majors and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Disorders, preparing him to pursue a Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions. Although initially interested in working with patients who suffer from aphasia, as part of his general graduate education, he took a course in swallowing disorders: dysphagia. This is a fairly niche segment of the larger speech pathology field, but fascinated Cameron; and provided the bridge that ultimately led him to the healthcare field. He completed his graduate education with a concentration in medical speech pathology and, as a graduate clinician, worked at the Boston Veterans Affairs hospital in West Roxbury. It was here that Cameron found his calling in acute care.
He completed his Clinical Fellowship in Las Vegas at a pair of long term acute care facilities, where many patients come for more extensive tracheostomy and ventilator needs, but can develop the ability to eat and drink with a tracheostomy and while requiring a ventilator. It was here that Cameron gained experience and honed his skills in the rehabilitation process; with some of the most fragile patients in his facilities. Upon completion of his Fellowship in 2016, Cameron became certified by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) as an independent practitioner.
He then moved to San Diego with the promise of a job at Alvarado Hospital. He worked there for two years, serving roughly half his time in Alvrado's connected Acute Rehabilitation Unit, the San Diego Rehabilitation Institute. This is where Cameron further developed his skills in rehabilitation of communication and swallowing disorders; but, through meeting dozens of diverse families, and working with them and his patients for multiple weeks, developed understanding of the importance of family and culture.
Cameron joined Scripps and started at their Encinitas hospital, however, with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, he transitioned to Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego where he serves patients across a Level 1 Trauma Center. In a large urban hospital that serves the most acutely ill and injured patients, with as densely multicultural population as San Diego boasts, Cameron's critical thinking, cultural sensitivity, and compassion are tested daily. Cameron always takes as much time as is needed to counsel his patients through their condition, as he recognizes the loss of the ability to eat and swallow normally is a drastic and unexpected change to a patient's life. Although challenging, the daily challenge is greatly rewarding to Cameron, who one day ultimately wants to become a clinical instructor to help develop the next generation of clinicians.
