Prior to embarking upon her professional journey, she earned a Bachelor of Science in human biology and microbiology from La Sierra University. She subsequently attained a Master of Public Health from Loma Linda University and completed an internship to become a registered dietician and registered dietitian nutritionist with the Ventura Department of Health. She subsequently earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Loma Linda University in 2005.
While pursuing her education, Dr. Burns-Whitmore began her career as a professor and researcher with California State Polytechnic University in 1995, a role in which she continues to the present. In this capacity, she develops courses and programs to teach nutrition science. Her expertise resides in utilizing supplement or food products to observe changes in body composition, mood and blood nutrient values. She researches both chemical and body composition indicators to better understand vegetarian nutrition and nutritional metabolism. In recognition of her excellent work in this space as an educator, she was honored with a Student-Mentor of the Year Award in 2015 and an Outstanding Faculty Adviser of the Year Award in 2017.
In addition to her main career path, Dr. Burns-Whitmore serves as a member of the advisory councils for San Antonio College and Orange County College. She also lends her expertise as a program reviewer for the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics. Out of her continued dedication to research in her field, she is a member of the vegetarian practice group and research practice group for the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Passionate about helping people however she can, Dr. Burns-Whitmore devotes her work to improving the field of nutrition science. She is currently working on several research projects she is writing for publication, and is considering writing another paper on vitamin D and calcium co-supplementation.
