An expert in industrial engineering, logistics, optimization and scheduling, Dr. Sarin has served as a dedicated educator and researcher for more than 40 years. To prepare for his career, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Delhi College of Engineering, Delhi University, Delhi, India in 1970. After moving to the United States, he attained a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering from Kansas State University in 1973 and a Doctor of Philosophy from North Carolina State University in 1978.
Following the conclusion of his doctoral degree, Dr. Sarin began his academic career in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Ohio State University, and then joined the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Virginia Tech in 1983. Besides teaching, he consistently works with graduate students, mentoring them through their work supported by research grants while conducting his own research and writing papers. His students have excelled in their careers, allowing him to assist with the mathematical problems he enjoys solving. He achieved the rank of Paul T. Norton Endowed Professor in 2002.
In recognition of his expertise, Dr. Sarin has been invited to give several keynote addresses at international conferences. Dr. Sarin has been honored with several prestigious awards to recognize his outstanding scholarly accomplishments, teaching, and mentoring. Dr. Sarin was honored with the Albert Holzman Distinguished Educator Award for his outstanding contributions to the industrial engineering profession through teaching, research and his publications by Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE, the flagship professional organization of industrial engineering). He has also been honored with the David F. Baker Distinguished Research Award, the highest research award from the Institute of Industrial Engineers, for significant contributions to the advancement of the industrial engineering profession through his outstanding research activity. He is a recipient of the Virginia Tech Dean's Award for Excellence in Research. He has been honored with several best paper awards.
For his teaching and mentoring, Dr. Sarin has received numerous awards, beginning with the Sporn Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Virginia Tech College of Engineering in 1997 and the Virginia Tech College of Engineering Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1999. He was named as the Virginia's Engineering Educator of the Year in 1998 when receiving the Pletta Award, and became a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers in 1999. He also achieved the highest graduate advising award given by Virginia Tech, the Alumni Award for Excellence in Graduate Advising in 2013. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, NC State in 2018. He also received the Distinguished Service Award from ISDSI in 2016. Most recently, he was presented with Hind Rattan (Jewel of India) Award, the highest award given to non-resident Indians and the prestigious Mahatma Gandhi Samman Award, both in "recognition of his outstanding services, achievements, and contributions," in 2019, as well as the Virginia Tech Graduate School's Outstanding Mentor Award in 2020.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Sarin has contributed a wealth of his research to the engineering field, including a variety of articles appearing in prestigious journals. He has co-authored two books: "Flow Shop Lot Streaming," which describes the latest models, analysis, and algorithms in lot streaming, a technique that helps in accelerating production, and "Stochastic Scheduling: Expectation-Variance Analysis of a Schedule," which helps in determining the expectation and variance of the completion time of a schedule, and thereby, the risk of completing a schedule within a time window. He has also co-edited a book "Essays in Production, Project Planning and Scheduling-A Festschrift in Honor of Dr. Salah E. Elmaghraby."
Dr. Sarin has served as an associate editor for the IIE Transactions from 1992 to 1997 and he was a co-editor for its special issue on scheduling and logistics in 1992, and an editorial board member for the International Journal of Production Planning and Control from 1988 to 2008. Additionally, he has lent his expertise as the area editor of production planning and scheduling for Computers and Industrial Engineering since 2000 and as an editorial board member for the International Journal of Planning and Scheduling since 2011.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Sarin plans to continue working with his students, helping them to become successful in their professional journeys and offer his services in international collaboration as a Fulbright Specialist.
