Adekunle Fatai Salau Provides Support for Startups Through AFS Consulting, Inc.

The founder and chief executive officer of AFS Consulting, Inc., Adekunle Salau has dedicated himself to providing clients with assistance in improving their operations.

Mr. Salau gained a technical expertise early on, earning a Bachelor of Science in computer sciences from the University of Lagos in 1987 and a Master of Science in computer sciences from the same university in 1989. Additionally, he went on to achieve several technical certifications, including a Visual Studio Essential Training.

After 23 years of working for large firms, it became clear to him that startups and medium-sized businesses did not have access to professional support, and he did not think that was right. To help address this shortcoming, he established AFS to provide the services that he found were lacking in the industry.

Throughout his career, Mr. Salau's most notable achievement has been developing people. In order to achieve objectives in the business world, in his view, professional development is an absolute necessity, and that is the job he's been doing for the past 20 years. Managing technical professionals is different than professionals in other fields, according to Mr. Salau. "They are intelligent, so you have to manage them differently and delicately from the way you manage other people."

Professionally, Mr. Salau's greatest accomplishment was helping the Nigerian banking industry to design and implement a banking verification number. This system assigns a unique identifier that identifies any customer within the Nigerian banking system. It was the first system of its kind in the world and remains the only one that has been implemented industry-wide anywhere in the world.

AFS Consulting is a management consulting firm specializing in business transformation or organizational transformation. The firm helps organizations transform from one state to another, which could also mean implementing a change in strategy. It could mean going on a digitized journey, or it could mean organizational changes involving structure and people. Mr. Salau started his consulting career with Price Waterhouse, which is now called PricewaterhouseCoopers. He was involved with management consulting at Price Waterhouse, and they merged with Coopers and Lybrand in 1998. He then became a partner of PwC in 2005. Mr. Salau moved to the African firm and restarted their consulting business in 12 countries in Africa. He was a managing partner for the consulting business in the region they termed Africa Center, which stretches from West Africa to Central Africa, excluding North Africa and South Africa. He did that until 2011. In December 2011, he moved to Ernst and Young, to help them establish their own advisory business in West Africa. He did that for another five years. In 1995, He was involved with a PwC seminar, and the topic of what everyone's life ambitions were came up. He said that his life's ambition was to be the Global Leader for PwC, and everybody laughed at him. Today, he is very happy that he is not only the global leader of his own institution, but he is its founder. It was worth everybody's laugh, and he coined the phrase, "Low aim, not failure, is a crime."
