An expert in electronics engineering, Dr. Schamiloglu has earned distinction as an educator for more than 30 years. To prepare for his career, he earned a Bachelor of Science in applied physics in 1979 and a Master of Science in plasma physics in 1981, both from Columbia University. He subsequently attained a Doctor of Philosophy in engineering from Cornell University in 1988.
Since graduating, Dr. Schamiloglu has served as a distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering, as well as the associate deal for research and innovation at the University of New Mexico. In this capacity, he teaches a course each semester for graduate or undergraduate electromagnetics. He also teaches an additional master's degree-level course each semester at the University of Global and National Security Policy Institute.
In recognition of his expertise, Dr. Schamiloglu was the inaugural recipient of the Magne "Kris" Kristiansen Award in honor of his contributions to experimental nuclear and plasma sciences by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society in 2019. He was elected fellow of the IEEE and a fellow of the American Physical Society.
As part of his career and out of dedication to improving his community, Dr. Schamiloglu has also held numerous positions in civil and research organizations. He was the chair for the Committee for New Mexico Research Innovation Collaborative at the University of New Mexico and served as the special assistant to the provost for the university's National Labor Relations Board. He was also a board member for the Quantum New Mexico Committee of the university's Sandia National Laboratories and the board president for the Summa Foundation. He was also a subcommittee chair for the International Electrotechnical Commission and a chair for the fellow evaluation committee for the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society.
A first-generation American born from immigrant parents, Dr. Schamiloglu is proud to have accomplished a great deal throughout his career. He is passionate about his profession and melds his professional life with his personal life, believing they are best when interconnected. He intends to retire in the foreseeable future, and is discovering ways to preserve his laboratory to hand down to a younger colleague.
