Committed to serving his community through the field of legal service, Mr. Ketola spent more than four decades defending and enforcing the law as an attorney. After completing coursework in St. Cloud, Minnesota he earned a Bachelor of Arts in business and economics, with an emphasis in accounting, from the University of Minnesota at Duluth. He went on to work with the accounting department for 3M Company, after which he lent his expertise to the Economics Laboratory. While working for economics laboratory he attended William Mitchell College of Law and graduated in 1972.
He then began working with Yetka and Newby Law Firm in Cloquet, Minnesota, where one of his duties was prosecuting misdemeanor offenses for the city of Cloquet. Upon leaving the firm of Yetka and Newby he embarked on a role as an attorney at his own firm, the Marvin E. Ketola Law Office. He worked as a public defender for the 6th Judicial District for five years. He was elected Carlton County Attorney in 1983 and served until his retirement in 2005. He also served on the Board of the Minnesota Counties Attorney's Association and was the first recipient of the annual Johnson Distinguished Service Award. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Mr. Ketola served on the board of directors of the United Way of Duluth and was elected as a state representative for District 14B for the 69th Legislative Session of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1975 to 1976. While in this position, he worked in crime prevention and corrections, health and welfare, and the judiciary. In 2022 he became a member of the Minnesota Legislative Society, a non-profit corporation, consisting of only past members of the Minnesota Legislature.
