Board certified in both internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Breaux's highly successful career has spanned more than 50 years to date. He is currently the section head of consultative cardiology and medical director of Cardiology at Ochsner Hospital New Orleans. Additionally, Dr. Breaux has held hospital positions at the Chalmette Medical Center, St. Bernard Parish Hospital and Pendleton Memorial Methodist Hospital and served patients at a private practice group in East New Orleans for 30 years. Adjacent to his main responsibilities in the field, he is a clinical associate professor of medicine at Tulane University, a position he has held since 1999.
Dr. Breaux was inspired to enter the medical field in his childhood by his family's general practitioner, who exhibited a thoughtful and caring demeanor in their interactions with patients. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree with honors from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1962, he enrolled at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, obtaining his Doctor of Medicine in 1966.
Dr. Breaux's training continued with an internship in internal medicine at Charity Hospital at Tulane University, a residency in internal medicine from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine, and a chief residency in internal medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine. From 1967 to 1969, he was a battalion surgeon in the 13th Engineer Combat Battalion of the U.S. Marine Corps. Following the conclusion of his military service, Dr. Breaux resolved to focus on cardiology as his specialty, perceiving it to be the most challenging field, leading him to complete a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Tulane University in 1973.
Among his many career accomplishments, Dr. Breaux is especially proud of his leadership positions within various medical organizations, including serving as the president of the New Orleans Parish Medical Society, the Louisiana Medical Society and the Louisiana chapter of the American College of Cardiology. He also served on the Board of Governors of the American College of Cardiology. He is also proud of his work with the Bring Back New Orleans Commission, which was active in bringing back health care providers to the area after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
He received an award for outpatient teaching from the Tulane University School of Medicine, was named a Super Doctor by SuperDoctors.com, and was named a Top Doc by New Orleans Magazine. Looking toward the future, Dr. Breaux hopes to continue in his public role as the president of various health care organizations and to continue his active participation in initiatives and efforts to positively impact the lives of the people in his community.
