After graduating from the University of Connecticut as an Honor's Scholar with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, cum laude, Ms. Fitzgerald attended Vermont Law School in South Royalton, Vermont to study environmental law. There she earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.), magna cum laude, and a Master's in the Study of Environmental Law (M.S.L.), summa cum laude, in 1995. While at Vermont Law School, Ms. Fitzgerald was also a member of the Vermont Law Review, and her student note was published. Following this accomplishment, Ms. Fitzgerald attained two Masters of Law (LL.M.) at The George Washington University School of Law, one in Litigation and Dispute Resolution, graduating with highest honors, and the second LL.M. in International and Comparative Law.
During her third year in law school, Ms. Fitzgerald was recruited by the United States Department of Justice to work in the Environment and Natural Resources Division in the Department's Honors Program, where she litigated environmental law cases on behalf of the Department until 2009. In 2009, Ms. Fitzgerald transferred to the Board of Immigration Appeals, in the Department's Executive Office for Immigration Review, after becoming interested in immigration law after completing a summer course at Oxford University where she studied refugee and asylum law. Presently, Ms. Fitzgerald works as an attorney-advisor at the Board of Immigration Appeals, and is involved in drafting decisions in appeals from immigration judge decisions nationwide.
Ms. Fitzgerald has accrued several honors during her undergraduate and graduate studies, and in her legal career. Among them, she received the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Award for Achievement in the Study of Conservation Biology in 1992, the American Jurisprudence Award for Corporations Law in 1994, while studying at Vermont Law School, and several achievement awards while practicing at the Department of Justice. Ms. Fitzgerald is a member of the American Bar Association.
