Drawing on eight years of professional experience in academics, Dr. Corum is recognized for outstanding performance as an English instructor and academic advisor at Southeastern Illinois College, a role he has held since 2020. Dr. Corum advises prospective and current students with degree program selection and curriculum plans and works closely with students who are struggling academically. As an instructor, he delivers lectures, crafts lesson plans, grades assignments and assists students to hone their writing skills.
Teaching is part of the fabric of Dr. Corum's family; two of his three siblings work in the education field, and as a child, his mother encouraged him to read, igniting Dr. Corum's interest in literature. As an undergraduate, he studied English and religious studies at Western Kentucky University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 2015, summa cum laude. He went on to obtain a Master of Arts in literature and rhetorical criticism from Southern University Carbondale in 2017 while also serving as a graduate student instructor. He achieved a PhD from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2022. While pursuing his doctoral degree, he served as a second language instructor for VIPKid. In 2019, Dr. Corum was certified in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) and teaching English as a second or foreign language (TESOL).
Dr. Corum has been recognized with multiple awards throughout his academic career. A skilled public speaker, he has performed strongly in several events hosted by the American Forensic Association. In fact, he was a finalist and quarterfinalist in the extemporaneous speaking category. He also placed as an octafinalist in the Lincoln-Douglas debate double and won the Lincoln-Douglas Debate Speaking Award. At Western Kentucky University, he received a Scholar of Potter Award in 2015 and a President's List Award for four consecutive years. Additionally, he received a Top Presentation Award at the Western Kentucky University student research conference in 2014 and 2015.
As a commitment to his field, Dr. Corum has served as the treasurer and a first-year representative for the Association of English Graduate Instructors and Students and maintains memberships with a number of organizations, including the American Forensics Association, the National Forensics Association, the Western Kentucky University English Club, the Western Kentucky University Speech and Debate Team, and the Western Kentucky University Student Staff Interview Committee. He is also aligned with the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment, the Modern Language Association, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and Pi Kappa Delta National Honorary Society.
