Upon earning a Bachelor of Science in engineering physics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Zediker received a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in nuclear and plasma engineering from his alma mater. Subsequently, he began his career as a senior principal engineer with McDonnell Douglas / Boeing, where he worked between 1983 and 1997 on developing high power laser systems, laser radar systems and laser communications systems During his career at McDonnell Douglas he launched a series of commercial products and received numerous new product introduction awards from Laser Focus World, Photonic Spectra and Photonics Magazine.
He co-founded Nuvonyx Inc. as President and Chief Executive Officer in 1998, where he remained until 2007. Nuvonyx received numerous awards from industry including Supplier of the Year from Raytheon as well as multiple awards from the trade magazines for new product introductions. Nuvonyx acquired Thales Laser Diode in 2006 and formed Nuvonyx Europe effectively doubling revenue at the time. Nuvonyx was sold to Coherent in 2008, the largest commercial laser manufacturer in the world at the time.
Between 2008 and 2009, Dr. Zediker worked as vice president of Coherent Direct Diode Lasers Systems, through which he reported to the chief executive officer and managed the profits and losses of the division as well as the integration of Nuvonyx into Coherent.
Dr. Zediker co-founded Foro Energy and served as its Chief Technology Officer from 2009 until 2015. During that period, Foro Energy achieve many world firsts and was recognized by the Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu, for its accomplishments in transporting high power laser energy through long optical fibers. Foro Energy developed a high power laser drilling system for drilling deep geothermal wells under the ARPA-E program and demonstrated the ability to drill through ultrahard crystalline rock in a simulation well.
Dr. Zediker recognized the emergence of a new technology and in 2015 co-founded NUBURU Inc. to develop high power blue industrial lasers. He currently serves as NUBURU's Chief Executive Officer, Chairman and President. NUBURU Inc., lasers excel at welding copper, gold and aluminum and are also capable of welding all other materials which translates to even faster speeds when used for 3D printing than an IR laser can achieve. NUBURU has been recognized for its innovative products by Laser Focus World (Platinum and Gold Innovator awards), and Photonic Spectra (Prism Award Finalist), and the World of Photonics in Munich for new product introductions as well as receiving the Technology Innovation Award from Frost & Sullivan.

Dr. Zediker is a Senior Fellow with the International Society for Optics and Photonics, the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association and the Directed Energy Professional Society. He started the High Power Diode Laser Technology conference at Photonic's West in 2002 and still serves as its Chairman today.
In conjunction with his work, he has been a member of the advisory board for the Department of Physics at the University of Illinois since 2012. Because of his service to the University, Dr. Zediker was awarded the Outstanding Alumni Service Award in 2018.
