Dr. Yuan is a renowned virologist, immunologist and professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology. A faculty member since 2007 at Virginia Tech, she was recruited from her PhD degree alma mater, The Ohio State University (OSU), where she worked as both a research scientist and adjunct assistant professor between 2002 and 2007. Dr. Yuan currently teaches lectures of Molecular Virology to graduate level students and Emerging Infectious Diseases to Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students. During an earlier stage of her career, Dr. Yuan gained experience as an assistant pharmacist at Beijing Thoracic Hospital, as a research assistant in several different laboratories in the Capital Institute of Pediatrics in Beijing and as a visiting scientist at OSU.
A seasoned researcher, Dr. Yuan began studying the molecular epidemiology of human rotavirus in 1991 and has also extensively studied host-pathogen interactions, pathogenesis, and immunity of enteric viruses, mainly human rotaviruses and noroviruses. Today, the Yuan Laboratory is focused on studying the pathogenesis and immunity of enteric pathogens, as well as developing novel prophylactics and therapeutics against enteric viruses. Throughout the course of her professional career, Dr. Yuan has notably secured research grants to support her research from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as well as grants from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and vaccine companies.
Inspired to become a scientist by Marie Curie, a Polish-French physicist and Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Yuan initially began studying pharmaceutics and biochemistry before becoming immersed in immunology and virology. Passionate about helping others by developing vaccines and treatments to save lives, Dr. Yuan finds great satisfaction in her work.
Dr. Yuan is the author of the 2022 book "Vaccine Efficacy Evaluation: The Gnotobiotic Pig Model" via CRC Press. The book offers information regarding establishing Gn pig models of human rotavirus and human norovirus infection and disease, assessing protective efficacy, measuring immune responses, and more. She is the author/co-author of over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles, 14 book chapters, and 17 invited review articles. Dr. Yuan has also garnered recognition as a verified peer reviewer for a multitude of scholarly journals, such as Journal of Virology, Journal of Medical Virology, Vaccine, mBio, and Gut Microbes, etc. She has also been an associated editor at Frontiers and a member of several editorial boards, including Scientific Reports and Viruses. Additionally, Dr. Yuan has served as a reviewer in more than two dozen national grant application review panels for NIH, USDA and NSF, etc., and for more than a dozen international grant applications and has lectured publicly on various topics in her research areas as an invited speaker on over 40 occasions between 2000 and 2022.
After acquiring her undergraduate diplomas in pharmaceuticals and biochemistry in her native China, Dr. Yuan received a Master of Medicine in immunology and virology at the Capital Institute of Pediatrics in Beijing in 1991. She subsequently received a Doctor of Philosophy in immunology and virology at OSU with the world-renowned scientist and university distinguished professor Linda J. Saif as her mentor from 1996 to 2000. Dr. Yuan also completed postdoctoral training at the NIAID, NIH from 2000 to 2002 under the mentorship of the late Dr. Albert Kapikian and Dr. Yasutaka Hoshino who together developed the first licensed vaccine against human rotavirus.
To remain aware of developments affecting her field, Dr. Yuan is a life member of the American Society for Virology, the American Society for Microbiology, the International Society for Vaccines, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
In recognition of her accomplishments, Dr. Yuan received the PhD Dissertation of the Year Award, aka, William E. Krauss Director's Award for Excellence in Research from OSU, an Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award from Virginia Tech, an International Professorship Award for Asia from the American Society for Microbiology, and a Pfizer Award for Research Excellence. Among numerous other accolades, Dr. Yuan was recently honored with a Grant Turnwald Innovation Award from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. In the award note, she was praised because her presence within the college fostered revolutionary and multidisciplinary unities which have profoundly impacted the college's tradition and international recognition. Since her initial appointment as an Assistant Professor in 2007, Yuan has turned into a world-renowned scientist, knowledgeable in human-centric ailments, spanning many analysis fields including viral pathogenesis, immunity, prophylactics, therapeutics, vaccines, and pre/probiotics.
