An aviation enthusiast since childhood, Mr. Williams enjoyed a fulfilling career as a pilot that spanned more than 35 years. For two and a half decades, he served as the chief pilot and aviation manager for the Ethyl Corporation, a fuel additive company headquartered at the Richmond International Airport, advancing the ranks from co-pilot to captain and chief pilot. He eventually rose to become the manager of the aviation department. He also worked as a pilot instructor for several years and held certifications as an instructor, commercial pilot and multi-engine pilot, and possessed an air transport license.
Mr. Williams' fascination with flying began while coming of age, during which time he enjoyed visiting airports to watch planes take off and land, as well as speak with pilots and instructors. His interest in flying as an occupation grew during his two years serving in the U.S. Army. His education involved coursework at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and the University of Las Vegas at Reno, and training at the Reno Stead Airport Base.
Among his many career accomplishments, Mr. Williams is most proud to have climbed the career ladder within the aviation field, a process that required years of hard work and the support of his family and colleagues. In his personal life, he takes great satisfaction in his role as an elder at the West End Church of Christ and enjoys being active with the Vintage Aircraft Association, the Toastmasters Club of America, the Richmond Power Squadron Boating Club, and the Association of Mature Adult Citizens.
In his retirement, Mr. Williams looks forward to continuing his passion for lifelong learning and increasing his involvement in politics. He also looks forward to spending time with his wife, Shelby, and their family, including their daughter, Dawn, her husband, Randy, and four grandchildren: Elizabeth, Taylor, Haley and Olivia.
