Hailing from more than three decades of nursing experience in emergency, intensive care, home health, diagnostic imaging, critical care float pool, outpatient infusion, cardiac catheterization laboratory, and surgery, Ms. Spearman has distinguished herself in her role as a health care professional and clinical coach. In 2015, she accepted an opportunity at Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) in Dallas as an operating room registered nurse. After six years at BUMC, she became a registered nurse first assistant (RNFA) in 2015 and, in 2021, became recognized as the first BUMC staff RNFA and the operating room weekend supervisor for the health care facility.
As a part of her professional commitments at BUMC, Ms. Spearman averages 28 hours per week as an RNFA, which is notably a perioperative registered nurse that serves as a first assistant during surgical operations. On Saturdays and Sundays, she dedicates an additional 24 hours to a supervisory role where she oversees a team of experts in BUMC's Level 1 trauma center. Ms. Spearman also works in collaboration with designated liver, lung, and heart teams.
Ms. Spearman was previously employed with Dallas Regional Medical Center as the director of surgical services between 2013 and 2015. She also held leading nursing positions with the North Central Surgical Center, Medical Center of Arlington, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and Medical City Hospital of Dallas. During an earlier stage of her career, Ms. Spearman garnered experience at San Angelo Community Hospital as a charge nurse beginning in 1991.
Throughout her extensive career, Ms. Spearman recalls several shining moments that have been influential in her career. During her tenure with Medical City, she was invited to help establish a team-building program on patient experience. By utilizing a focus group, they successfully devised various ways in which her unit could address those needs. Ms. Spearman also had the opportunity to teach staff members about customer service while working as a department representative at Presbyterian Hospital Dallas.
Ms. Spearman has been actively involved with various nonprofit and charitable organizations. Among them, she has contributed to wildlife rehabilitation by making pouches, blankets and other security items to help keep baby animals warm. Ms. Spearman also makes sensory friends (dolls) for children and elderly people that need a comforting friend to hold. Ms. Spearman is a staunch supporter of our Veterans and Mission 22, which remembers that 22 veterans take their lives each day.
Well qualified in her field, Ms. Spearman received an Associate of Science in nursing at Angelo State University in 1990, followed by a Bachelor of Science in nursing and a Master of Business Administration in business administration and management at Texas Woman's University in 2009 and 2012, respectively. Additionally, she received credentials in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support through the American Heart Association, as an RNFA through the National Institute of First Assisting, and as a Certified Nurse Operating Room, Certified Emergency Room Nurse, and Certified Intensive Care Unit Nurse. Looking toward the future, Ms. Spearman plans to possibly return to school to achieve a veterinary degree.
