As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A respected member of his local community, Mr. Melton is a practicing attorney and partner at Gailor Hunt Davis Taylor & Gibbs PLLC in Raleigh, North Carolina. Joining the firm in 2013 after clerking for the Honorable Richard A. Elmore of the North Carolina Court of Appeals for two years, he represents clients in matters of family law as a board-certified specialist and mediator, helping them to resolve issues both in and out of court. In addition, Mr. Melton assists clients in all areas of divorce and family law and focuses a portion of his practice on family law appeals.
Also active in public service, Mr. Melton was elected to the Raleigh City Council as an at-large council member in 2019. An extraordinary victory, he is the first openly gay person to win a seat on the council. Some of his goals include fostering Raleigh as a more resilient and equitable city, one that will invest more funds in public transit and become less dependent on personal vehicles. Among other objectives, he is focused on housing issues and is avid about developing more tiny homes. Mr. Melton also serves as the chair of the municipality's Economic Development and Innovation Committee and as a member of its Transportation and Transit Committee.
In 2015, Mr. Melton notably authored an article in Attorney at Law Magazine titled 'Aftermath of SCOTUS Marriage Equality Decision,' in which the Supreme Court of the United States ruled 5-4 in favor of nationwide marriage equality.
As an accomplished member of the community, Mr. Melton was involved with establishing Stonewall Sports USA, a national, philanthropic and community-based sports league for LGBTQ+ people and their friends, in 2013. He subsequently formed a local chapter in Raleigh, which has since expanded into more than 20 cities throughout the country. Mr. Melton has also served on the board of directors of the TLC (formerly Tammy Lynn Center), co-created a local program that provides pro bono legal assistance to families affected by domestic violence in the Wake County District Court, and was instrumental in establishing an annual fundraising event for the North Carolina AIDS Action Network.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts in political science at North Carolina State University in 2008, Mr. Melton went on to receive a Doctor of Jurisprudence, magna cum laude, at North Carolina Central University School of Law in 2011. He is also a board-certified specialist in family law and a certified family financial mediator through the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission.
Mr. Melton is a professional member of the Wake County Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the North Carolina Bar Association. He is also active with the Interfraternity Council and Phi Delta Phi and is a past president of the Delta Upsilon International Fraternity. Grateful for his continued success, both as an attorney and local leader, Mr. Melton looks forward to continually building impactful relationships that benefit everyone throughout the Raleigh community.
