With more than 40 years of excellence as a psychotherapist and educator to his credit, Dr. Pelley has dedicated his career to availing himself on behalf of those in need. Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, he served honorably in the United States Navy. Following the conclusion of his service, he further distinguished himself as a commander of his local American Legion post for more than a decade.
To prepare for his career, Dr. Pelley earned a Master of Arts in educational psychology in 1975 from the University of Tennessee at Nashville, after which he transferred to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where he received a Doctor of Education in educational and counseling psychology in 1981.
While pursuing his academic efforts, Dr. Pelley maintained involvement as an educator at several school systems, including Robertson and Anderson Counties and Oak Ridge City, teaching elementary and junior high school students and serving as a school counselor from 1979 to 1985. He subsequently joined the staff at his alma mater as an adjunct professor and remained active with the institution for more than 22 years, retiring in 2017. During his tenure, he was honored with an Outstanding Faculty award and was later presented with a Distinguished Alumni award in 2021.
While lending his expertise in academia, Dr. Pelley has served as a psychotherapist for his own practice, Pelley and Associates. In this capacity, he provides a variety of counseling methodologies, including hug therapy and helping children with autism spectrum disorder, specializing in working with patients with their anxieties. He sees clients daily, striving to help each person cope with their mental and emotional needs.
In addition to his primary career endeavors, Dr. Pelley has sat on his local elected council in Athens, Tennessee, as a councilmember for more than two decades. He is also a member of the Optimist Club and Mars Hill Presbyterian Church. Looking toward the future, he intends to concern himself less with financial gain and more with remaining of service to his fellow man.
