An expert in artificial intelligence and quantum computing research, Dr. Wheeler has been a professor and director of data science at the University of North Texas (UNT) since 2021. Dr. Wheeler is also continually exploring possible future classes to expand the university's course offerings. Prior to joining UNT, he was a senior professor of engineering and information science at the Keller Graduate School of Management International at DeVry University in Dallas-Fort Worth from 2002 to 2017.
As a scholar, Dr. Wheeler enjoys working alongside a team of research assistants on campus. Among his interests, he enjoys studying autonomous systems, machine learning, dynamic planning systems, linear symbolic problem-solving systems and natural language processing. Dr. Wheeler also aims to remain focused on research technology, data science and quantum research, as well as quantum computing research.
Aside from his tenure in academia, Dr. Wheeler was an artificial intelligence research and data scientist for Wipro Limited from 2018 to 2020 and a system engineer for Compaq Computer Corporation between 1995 and 1998. Furthermore, Dr. Wheeler spent several years in consulting.
Dr. Wheeler has contributed several academic papers on alpha-beta quiescence, quantum computing and other topics in peer-reviewed journals. He also served as the mission commander for Crew 88, which was a simulation on Earth, to research and perfect various ergonomic issues regarding spacesuits, as well as explorations and microfossils. The simulation was notably featured on the discovery series of the UNT YouTube channel in 2022. Additionally, Dr. Wheeler was recognized as a technical adviser for the 2013 film, "Computer Chess." The movie, which was directed and written by Andrew Bujalski, is set in the 1980s and is about a man versus machine chess tournament. The movie was released after Dr. Wheeler invented a chess-playing program while pursuing his master's degree that was an artificially intelligent chess program called a heuristic associative linear algorithm, or HAL.
As part of his established commitment to civic endeavors, Dr. Wheeler is a mission transport pilot and aerospace education officer for the Civil Air Patrol of the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary. Dr. Wheeler also serves as the president and chief executive officer of the Veteran Warbirds of America.
Dr. Wheeler studied at Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University where he received a Bachelor of Science in computer science and mathematics in 1982 and a Master of Science in computer science and artificial intelligence in 1985. He subsequently attended Walden University where he achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in artificial intelligence in 1992. Highly qualified in his field, Dr. Wheeler received certification in machine learning, implementation in business, in 2019.
Honoring his work, Dr. Wheeler was the recipient of an Aerospace Education Excellence Award. He was also named as a distinguished senior member of the technical staff at Wipro. Dr. Wheeler attributes his success to his faith, hard work and passion for the field, as well as his tenacity to focus on his goals.
