Focusing his career on an area that is steadily gaining more popularity, demography is notably the statistical study of populations. Dr. May's extensive career in academia began in 1972 as a research assistant at his alma mater, the Catholic University of Louvain, in Belgium. He subsequently taught at several local high schools in Brussels and was an adjunct professor at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Dr. May garnered experience in the field as a UN associate expert in demography at the Institut Haïtien de Statistique et d'Informatique in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, as a UN adviser on demography and population statistics as part of the South Pacific Commission in Nouméa, New Caledonia, and as a senior associate and senior scientist for The Futures Group International in Washington, D.C. Additionally, Dr. May was influential with The World Bank in Washington, D.C., for more than 15 years as a population specialist, co-coordinator of the World Bank Population and Reproductive Health Thematic Group, senior population scientist and lead population scientist.
As an extension of his career, Dr. May has been active on various professional councils, including the scientific advisory council of POPDEVINTER in Paris since 2016 and the Berlin Institute for Population and Development in Berlin since 2015. Furthermore, Dr. May has remained a board member of the Association of Alfred Sauvy in Paris since 2013.
Widely published, Dr. May has authored books, book chapters, book reviews, peer-reviewed journal articles, web articles, blogs and op-eds. He has also presented as a keynote speaker and lecturer at numerous professional conferences, has served as a peer reviewer for various publications and has been a guest on several podcasts. Among his written works, Dr. May published the award-winning book, "World Population Policies: Their Origin, Evolution, and Impact" in 2012 and contributed the "International Handbook of Population Policies" in 2022 as a co-editor via Springer. Presently, Dr. May is in the process of translating several of his publications into other languages, including Spanish and Italian.
Dr. May completed secondary studies at Saint-Boniface High School in Brussels in 1967. He subsequently attended the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, where he achieved a Bachelor of Arts in modern history in 1973, a graduate diploma in demography in 1975 and a Master of Arts in demography, magna cum laude, in 1985. Dr. May also attained a Doctor of Philosophy in demography, summa cum laude, at the Université René Descartes (Sorbonne) in Paris in 1996.
As a part of his professional commitments, Dr. May is a member of the Population Association of Pakistan, the Union for African Population Studies, the Association Internationale des Démographes de Langue Française, the Population Reference Bureau, the Population Association of America, and the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population.
To commemorate his accomplishments, Dr. May received a Global Media Award for Best Book in Population for "World Population Policies" in 2012, a Good Practice ICR Quality Award for The Gambia HIV/AIDS Rapid Response Project Implementation Completion Report in 2008, the Chief Economist's Best Practice Award from the World Bank Africa Region in 2007, as well as numerous World Bank Spot Awards between 2000 and 2008.
