His mother surrounded him with books from infancy on, many of them medical tomes which he began to read at an early age. She shaped his identity as a healer in medicine and his awareness of the importance of literature as a repository of knowledge.
Remarkable academic medical education is the key to Dr. Shuman's contributions to Pediatric Neurology. He came back to the pediatric bedside in 1990 after completing his Pediatric Neurology residency with Dr. David Clark at the University of Kentucky, a masterful practitioner of the art of Neurology care. By this time Dr. Shuman had spent years in clinical research in Pediatric Neuropathology. He won an NIH Fellowship to study Pediatric Neuropathology at the University of Washington with Professor Ellsworth C. Alvord, Jr. who discovered the role of Myelin Basic Protein in MS and EAE. This fellowship came after completing his Anatomic Pediatric Pathology Residency at the UW with Pediatric Pathologist J. Bruce Beckwith, who articulated the pathology of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Dr. Shuman preceded his pathology training with his residency in Pediatrics at the University of Colorado with Professor C. Henry Kempe who brought Child Abuse to attention. He graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine where select faculty members helped him fashion his educational plan to become a Pediatric Neuropathologist. He came to Stanford from Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences with Special Departmental Honors in Experimental Psychology.
Dr. Shuman is Board Certified in Neuropathology, in NeuroImaging, and in Neurology with Special Competence in Child Neurology. He has nurtured a valuable professional network through his memberships in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Association of Neuropathologists (AANP), the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Child Neurology Society (CNS), and the American Academy of Neurology where he is a Fellow (AAN). He provides expert consultation for injured pediatric petitioners before the Vaccine Injury Compensation Court and has done so for the past 25 years.
Remarkable scholarly medical contributions to the understanding and care of child neurology disease have animated his joy and persistence in the practice of pediatric neurology. He discovered and proved pHisoHex toxicity in premature human infants and developed a model of it in baby rats. He described the occurrence, incidence, and predispositions to little strokes in the developing myelin of premature infants (PVL). He proved the frequency of and predispositions to large arterial strokes in term births. He linked this autopsy work to the MRI documentation of the same perinatal strokes in a population of living children with Cerebral Palsy. He described the neuropathology of genetic amino-acidopathies in children. He co-authored a textbook on Neuropathology. He co-authored a textbook on Pediatric Ultrasound. He brings to the bedside his wealth of training and experience in the expression of and intervention with child neurology diseases. He maintains his empathy for the threats of childhood diseases, the stresses on parents and sibs, and the need to listen. His mother's influences endure. Dr. Shuman plans to continue researching and writing for the academic and legal literatures. Dr. Shuman will continue to partner with patients and caregivers to deliver high-quality, thoughtful and researched care.
