GIG HARBOR, WA, September 13, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Kathryn Marie Brokaw has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

An expert in clinical pharmacy and pharmaceutical care, Dr. Brokaw dedicated her career to improving patient care and optimizing patient outcomes through pharmacokinetics, comprehensive medication management, and nutrition support. To prepare for her pharmacy career, she attended the University of Washington, from which she earned a Bachelor of Science in Botany with a minor in zoology in 1974 and a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1979. She completed an ASHP-accredited Hospital Residency in 1992. She subsequently attained a Masters in Religious Education from Loyola University in 1999 and a Doctor of Pharmacy from Idaho State University in 2001. Well qualified in her field, she is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Basic Life Support. In addition to her primary endeavors as a pharmacist, Dr. Brokaw has authored several published works and delivered presentations on her areas of expertise.

Dr. Brokaw embarked on her professional journey first as a hospital pharmacy technician and, later, as a pharmacist at Waldo General Hospital in 1970, where she remained active until 1983. During this time, she also served as a pharmacist for the Seattle Indian Health Board Medical Clinic. In 1983, she continued her career as the Director of Pharmacy for Kodiak Island Hospital in Alaska. When her family moved to Virginia, she became a staff pharmacist for the DeWitt Army Community Hospital at Fort Belvoir and then, upon completion of her Residency, a Patient Care Area Pharmacist for the Inova Fairfax Hospital Health System. Following the conclusion of this role, when her family moved to Idaho, Dr. Brokaw took a position as the Director of Religious Education (DRE) for the Diocese of Boise at St. Joseph Catholic Church. During this time she also functioned as a pharmacist consultant and retail pharmacist for SuperSave Drug and Home IV Care.

Committed to maintain the highest standards of practice, Dr. Brokaw accepted a leadership role in 2001 as a Clinical Coordinator for HCA Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, after which she took on her final role as a staff clinical pharmacist for St. Anthony Hospital of the Franciscan Health System in 2008. In this capacity, she provided pharmacokinetic consults, order entry, and clinical services, IV preparation, outpatient chemotherapy, patient education, code response, and COVID clinic coverage for the 112-bed hospital. During her tenure, which ended with her retirement in 2021 her committee work helped achieve a more than a two-fold increase in the hospital's Smart Pump library use, as well as contributing to a significant decrease in patient falls, increased hand washing compliance, and assisted the improvement in HCAHPS scores. Additionally, Dr. Brokaw has been a volunteer pharmacist for the International Medical Corps, Orthopedics Overseas, the Southeast Idaho Council of Governments of the Area Agency on Aging, and a medical mission to Honduras. She has also been active in LIONS International, helping to raise awareness, education, and funds for eye care and children's diabetes camps.

Over the course of her career, Dr. Brokaw has received numerous honors for her work and expertise. In 1988, she was named as the Alaska Hospital Pharmacist of the Year by the Alaska Pharmaceutical Association and received a commendation for her performance from the United States Army Medical Department in 1991. Additionally, she received a letter of recognition from the International Medical Corp for her work in setting up and organizing the outpatient pharmacy in Nasir Bagh Refugee Camp No. 1 in Pakistan. While working at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, Dr. Brokaw earned a Gold Star Award for her work in improving quality management in 2002.

Though she has achieved much during the course of her professional journey, Dr. Brokaw is most proud to have integrated the experiences and expertise of her colleagues in her own career endeavors. She operates on an understanding that other opinions are equally valuable as hers and strives to operate with a collaborative approach to medicine. Looking toward the future, Dr. Brokaw plans to continue writing and pursue her passion for painting. She has also been engaged both in her church and in Akashic records studies, and intends to start her own business in the field.
