Working in an area of medicine that requires extensive patience, Dr. Pérez Colón notes that her average patient spends anywhere from one week to four months in the hospital before being discharged. Dr. Pérez Colón initially chose medicine out of a love for science and a desire to help others. She especially enjoys interacting with her patients and shepherding them back to good health. Dr. Pérez Colón attributes her success to her mother and the promise that she made that she would treat every patient as if they were family.
Dr. Pérez Colón began her academic studies at the University of Puerto Rico, where she completed an undergraduate degree in pre-medicine. She subsequently studied at Ponce Health Sciences University in Ponce, from which she achieved a Doctor of Medicine in 1997. Additional educational pursuits to her credit include a residency in internal medicine at Damas Hospital in Ponce in 2000, where she served as the chief resident in 2001. Dr. Pérez Colón also completed a fellowship in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine at the Juan VA Medical Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 2004.
Among numerous professional memberships, Dr. Pérez Colón is active with the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Physicians, and the Puerto Rico Medical Association. In light of her achievements, she has been the recipient of several accolades. Among them, she was honored with a Special Award from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística, a First Prize Award from the Damas Hospital Scientific Meeting and a Distinguished Citizen Award from the Mayor's Office in Ponce.
