COLLIERVILLE, TN, September 13, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Linda Sherrell, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. A retired mathematics and computer science professor, Dr. Sherrell has spent her career educating countless individuals with her wide range of expertise. Since 2013, she has been a bridge teacher and mathematics tutor serving her community. Outside of her main career path, Dr. Sherrell has served as a cashier at the Second Editions Bookstore of the Memphis Public Library and as a cashier at the Friends of the Library Bookstore in Collierville. She has served as a national representative for the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges and is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery, the American Bridge Teachers' Association and a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
Prior to her current position, Dr. Sherrell began her career as a mathematics instructor for Georgia Southern University in 1975 and was subsequently a mathematics lecturer for the University of South Carolina from 1977 until 1980. She served as a mathematics instructor for Louisiana State University from 1980 to 1988 and then as a computer science instructor for Southeastern Louisiana University between 1993 and 1994. She was subsequently an assistant professor in computer science for Arkansas State University from 1995 to 1999, working in the same capacity for the University of West Florida between 1999 and 2000. Dr. Sherrell served as a visiting associate professor for the University of Memphis from 2001-2013. Upon retirement, she served as the education liaison for Unit 144 of the Tennessee Bridge Association, where she remained until 2018.
Prior to embarking upon her professional journey, Dr. Sherrell earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Auburn University in 1972 and a Master of Science in mathematics from the same university in 1974. She subsequently attained a Doctor of Philosophy in computer science with a minor in mathematics from Louisiana State University in 1995. Well qualified in her academic field, she is also a certified Director, Best Practices and Online bridge teacher with the American Contract Bridge League; she achieved the ranking of Ruby Life Master in May 2022.
To commemorate her accomplishments at Louisiana State University, Dr. Sherrell was honored with a National Award from Upsilon Pi Epsilon and was named Best Teacher (selected by students) twice while working there. She also served as treasurer and vice president of the LSU Graduate Student Association. While at Auburn University, she was appointed treasurer of the Panhellenic Council as a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and received the Outstanding Senior award from Phi Beta Kappa. She received the Principal Investigator Millionaire Award from the University of Memphis during her tenure for her research.
Looking forward to the future, Dr. Sherrell intends to continue teaching bridge, currently aiming for the Diamond Life Master level. She has always been passionate about mathematics, winning competitions in her youth, which ultimately stimulated her career so that she could transfer that knowledge to her students.
