Drawing on more than 25 years of expertise in his field, Mr. Severance presently serves as the president of Wellen Park, a master-planned community designed by Mattamy Homes on the Gulf Coast of Florida in Venice. Recognized as one of the largest and fastest-selling master-planned communities in the U.S., Wellen Park is among the top five, selling over 1,000 homes per year. The planned community boasts 11,000 acres of land, with more than 6,500 acres still undeveloped, and notably includes residential single- and multi-family homes, apartments, senior living, healthcare facilities, hospitals, retail stores, restaurants, businesses, schools, and recreational facilities, including a major league baseball stadium.
Mr. Severance formerly served in the same capacity for Babcock Ranch by Kitson & Partners from 2016 to 2019, a 19,000-acre town and the first solar city in the U.S. Among other successful ventures, he was the chief executive officer for New Vector Ltd., the senior vice president of development strategy and operations for The St. Joe Company, and the chief executive officer of Seaside Community Development Corporation. Additionally, Mr. Severance owned a consulting firm for approximately 10 years, where he worked closely with eight of the top 25 clients in the large-scale, residential resort industry.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Severance plans to continue expanding his educational opportunities, believing it paramount to his success. He also aims to continue the successful development of Wellen Park, which has been on a solid growth trajectory for the past three years.
Actively involved in the larger region, Mr. Severance has served on boards of directors for Stay Focused, Water For Good and the Sarasota County Economic Development Council, as well as on the president's committee for Florida State University. He has also served on a national council of the Urban Land Institute for over 10 years, and as a host family for Better Together. He has been active with other national nonprofit organizations over the course of his career, including Charity: Water, The Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels America.
Mr. Severance has been recognized for his accomplishments with a Development of the Decade Award from Time magazine in 2005, the coveted Award of Excellence from the Urban Land Institute in 2006, and as Fundraiser of the Year by the American Heart Association in 2007.
Mr. Severance studied at Florida State University, where he acquired a Bachelor of Science in business and hospitality management in 1990. He subsequently received certification as a hotel administrator. While pursuing his academic efforts, he joined Sigma Chi and continues to serve as a member of the organization's alumni association. Mr. Severance currently lives in Florida with his wife of 26 years and has three daughters.
