Dr. Henry is a professor emeritus of Bemidji State University, having served the institution as an associate professor from 1998 to 2008. During her tenure, she specialized in history education and social studies and worked with countless students to provide a premier education. In an effort to contribute to inclusion efforts, Dr. Henry worked as a representative recruiter for many years for African-American students. She notes that she was encouraged to pursue a career in scholastics after learning that her parents were denied an education due to racial segregation. This motivated Dr. Henry to work toward efforts that ensure equitable access to education, which is something that she continues to perpetuate to this day as a volunteer in her community.
Dr. Henry commenced her career as a secondary school teacher for the Department of Public Education of Bunnell, Florida, in 1966. She later served as a secondary social studies teacher and chair of the department of the Government of the Virgin Islands from 1968 to 1983. In addition to her teaching career, Dr. Henry authored "The Girl from Jacksonville Who Dared to Dream, Hope and Believe!," published in 2011 and "Feeling Like a Stranger in Your Hometown? Ask the Girl from Jacksonville!," released in 2017. Inspired by her personal and professional experiences, these works strive to address the shared struggles endured by the people of the United States.
A dedicated civil advocate, Dr. Henry donated sums toward the Edward Waters College football program to assist with renovation efforts for its football complex. In recognition of her contributions, the "Dr. Annie B. Henry Football Locker Room" was presented in her honor. Additionally, Dr. Henry created an eponymous scholarship at Bemidji State University and donated proceeds from her book sales to the initiative.
Dr. Henry earned a Bachelor of Science from Edward Waters College in 1964 and a Master of Arts from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1969. She later attained a Doctor of Philosophy from Florida State University in 1988. A certified secondary teacher, Dr. Henry has maintained membership with the National Education Association to work toward improving the field for other professionals.
Dr. Henry was honored with a presidential citation as an associate professor of education by the Negro Spiritual and Other African-American Music in 1992. She received an honorary award from the Northwoods Coalition for Battered Women in 1994 and a women's study award merit for leadership, vision, elevation and promotion of Black History Month by Bemidji State University in 1997. In 2006, she was presented with Inter-Faculty Organization Multicultural Issued Committee and Honors. Moreover, she was recognized by the American Red Cross for volunteer disaster relief work in 1997.
