Dr. Kabir is a vice president and senior geotechnical engineer for GeoMechanics, Inc. Since joining the company in 1990, he has expertly developed subsurface investigation programs and completed the design of numerous foundations for superstructures, including bridges, subway systems, tunnels, high-rise buildings, retaining structures, silos, wharfs, dams and underground heavy constructions. Dr. Kabir's expertise extends to innovative design and construction over marginal grounds, and over sinkhole and mine void areas requiring in-situ ground and mine void stabilization, protection of at-ground structures during underground excavation by in-situ grouting, underpinning and ground freezing, etc. Dr. Kabir has also been involved in the design and construction of the complex earth and rock cutslopes and high earth and rock fill embankments. In addition, Dr. Kabir also performs extensive peer review of other consultants' work on important complex projects on behalf of governmental agencies in the U.S. and Bangladesh.
Over the course of his career, he has been involved in the ground investigation, and design and construction of numerous civil engineering projects primarily in the United States as well as some in Bangladesh. Dr. Kabir commenced his career with a design and construction supervision team for marine structure projects at Chattogram seaport in Bangladesh in the late 70s. He later gained valuable experience with a U.S.-based firm, with which he worked for 18 months before joining GeoMechanics, Inc. in 1990.
An alumnus of Iowa State University, Dr. Kabir earned a bachelor's degree in 1977 from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) followed by a master's degree from Michigan Technological University in 1983 and a Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering from Iowa State University in 1988. His Ph.D. dissertation won an award for best research from Iowa State University — a commendable achievement for any student of the prestigious institution.
Civically involved, Dr. Kabir volunteers through his local mosque and donates regularly to food drives and in helping the needy, specifically refugees from war affected areas. Supported by a robust educational background and years of hands-on experience, he is particularly proud of the advisory role he played in the design and construction of a 40 feet diameter and 2 miles long underwater twin tunnels in Chattogram, and the evaluation and design of a 260 KM long subway system in Dhaka for the government of Bangladesh, and his experience in designing an underground tunnel and transportation system in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Looking toward the future, Dr. Kabir intends to continue contributing to his field and act as a mentor for the next generation of engineers.
