Having spent more than 30 years as a leader in nursing, Ms. Zitta retired with a legacy of excellence in health care. After a stellar career in surgical medicine, obstetrics and pediatrics, she stayed home with her five children for 15 years before returning to nursing employment part time until the youngest entered college. Her experiences in nursing were invaluable in raising children and, occasionally, helping family and friends. She most recently served as the director of nurses for Starkville Manor Nursing Home, where she worked for more than 18 years. In this capacity, she rose through the ranks through dedication to hard work and learning from her experiences.
After retiring from her leadership role, Ms. Zitta continued to serve her community as a volunteer parish nurse at her church for more than a decade. Additionally, she was a member of the Nurses Christian Fellowship and the Auxiliary of the Gideons International. During her tenure with Starkville Manor Nursing Home, the American Red Cross closed their office in Starkville to work at a neighboring location, but many professionals, including Ms. Zitta, felt it was important to have a location in Starkville as well. They started Oservs, which provides disaster relief, disaster preparation and education, and health and safety classes to the area.
To prepare for her career, Ms. Zitta earned a registered nursing diploma from the Stuart Circle Hospital School of Nursing in 1961. She learned in her youth the essential skill of being an engaged listener, which served her well throughout her career. Having grown up on a farm, she gained a rich background of experiences and decided at an early age that she wanted to become a nurse. After undergoing a significant surgery at the age of 13, her passion for the field of health care was only confirmed. Now that she has retired, she is enjoying time well spent with her family, including her grandchildren.
