A virtuoso of the reggae music genre and calypso rock, Mr. Johnson has distinguished himself as a singer and songwriter since his early youth. Originally hailing from Steer Town, Jamaica, he grew up amidst destitution, but often found solace in the form of music. While singing one day, his Baptist pastor remarked that someday his voice would fill the airwaves on the radio.
After coming of age, Mr. Johnson found early success as a singer after placing second at his Parish Festival Singing Contest, presaging greater successes yet to come. Immersing himself in the culture and musical atmosphere of Kingston, Jamaica, he benefited richly from the mentorship of various singers and musicians, including Bob Marley, Lloyd Parks and the band Toots and the Maytals. Notably, Frederick Nathaniel "Toots" Hibbert, the lead singer of the band, taught Mr. Johnson how to play the guitar, after which he sang with the Hippie Boys for a short time.
After returning to Steer Town, Mr. Johnson formed The Eagles, a small band of three musicians, and later recorded albums for a variety of studios, including Studio One, Treasure Isle and Federal Records. Songs included "Sandcastle," "Paradise Island" and "Eagle Run." At the latter studio, he recorded four songs, including "Country Living," which went on to achieve great popularity. After the expiration of his contract, Mr. Johnson subsequently recorded several songs with the Dynamic Sounds studio, such as "Rasta Pickney" and "No Jah."
Faced with difficult competition throughout the music scene in Jamaica, Mr. Johnson immigrated to the United States and settled in New York, where he continued to sing while holding a full-time job. Performing under the new name of The Jamaican Eagles, he appeared at several clubs throughout New York, including The Q Club, Club Dynasty and My Father's Place at the Roslyn Hotel. During this time, Mr. Johnson also contributed to such albums as "Calypso Rock – Songs of Jamaica," which he recorded alongside Harry Belafonte and Slinger Francisco via Folkway Records in 1978.
Presently, Mr. Johnson has earned distinction as the owner of his own recording studio, J&J Music and Records, through which he has benefited as the sole holder of the rights to his new songs. A lifelong adherent of his Christian faith, much of his recent music centers on his religious identity, with such albums as "Brotherly Love," "It's Jesus," "Jesus Is the Light" and "Love Jesus" counted among them. Looking toward the future, Mr. Johnson hopes to continue recording music for as long as he is able, and to inspire younger musicians to never stop reaching for their dreams.
