Having accrued more than five decades of experience as an English teacher and teacher educator, Dr. Ley was named a Smith Distinguished Professor of Education in 1998 at Auburn University, where, for 27 years he taught English education and secondary reading education courses and directed the research of more than thirty doctoral students. He was a professor, associate department head, and graduate program officer in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching. He taught secondary English in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, schools for thirteen years before beginning his work at Auburn in 1974.
Dr. Ley served professional organizations in his field throughout his career. In Iowa, he was president of both the Iowa Council of Teachers of English and the Advanced Standing Program, a cooperative composition program linking high schools with the state's colleges and universities. In Alabama, he served the Alabama Reading Association in various capacities, including president. At the national level, he served as a board member for the Adolescent Assembly of the National Council of Teachers of English (ALAN) and on the editorial boards of English Journal and ALAN Review.
Following his retirement in 2001, Dr. Ley organized a memoir-writing class for members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the university, which he has taught continuously for eighteen years. He also assisted the literacy development of selected fourth graders at his neighborhood elementary school for fifteen years.
Dr. Ley earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and certification in English at Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa) and Master of Arts and Ph.D. degrees in English and Education at the University of Iowa. He received numerous teaching awards throughout his professional life and conducted research and published academic articles in several areas of interest, including young adult literature, the reading interests and habits of young adults, and best practices in the teaching of English and secondary reading.
Having devoted much of his effort to academic writing throughout his career, Dr. Ley has welcomed the opportunity to write his own life stories while teaching the memoir class. In 2018, he published a collection of those life stories, Writing My Life: A Patchwork of Memories.
