In 2020, Mr. Johns retired as an adjunct faculty member from the School of Government at Portland State University. He spent 39 years with the institution teaching courses in politics and law on the Portland campus. He also taught as an adjunct professor of political science at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, from 2010 to 2013 and was a visiting instructor at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, DC, in 1980. Moreover, he was a visiting professor of political science at Oregon State University in 1989.
In addition to teaching in higher education, Mr. Johns has published and spoken widely on the politics and science of nature conservation. Currently he dedicates much of his time to the Marine Conservation Institute as a member of its board of directors, through which he focuses on large-scale ecosystem conservation. The oceans face significant challenges, in part because they are out of sight and out mind to most people; yet they produce a substantial part of the world's oxygen (up to 70%) and absorb most of the world's heat. The Marine Conservation Institute, with locations in Seattle and Glen Ellen, California, is focused on the creation of a global system of strictly protected areas to ensure the health of all marine ecosystems and species. Mr. Johns also serves on the boards of several similar organizations, including the Conservation Biology Institute, the Greater Hells Canyon Council, the Urban Wildlife Research Project, and the Rewilding Institute.
A common thread in all these organizations is the effort to heal injuries to the Earth. Humans have made their homes by taking the homes of others—not a sound basis for a lasting or just human society.
Mr. Johns co-founded and served as the first executive director of The Wildlands Project (now Wildlands Network) in 1991 to allow wild life and wild spaces to recover from millennia of abuse. It promotes setting aside half of the Earth for the millions of non-human species. He co-founded Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation in 1993, a joint U.S.-Canada nonprofit organization, to connect and protect wildlife habitats. Moreover, since 2008, Mr. Johns has been a member of the World Commission on Protected Areas, which is recognized as one of six commissions of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, and has been active as an advisor to the Environmental Law Center in Canada, the Environment Canada on Earth Charter and Rio Summit.
Mr. Johns has shared his research regarding politics and science in the conservation movement with various professional publications. In 2009, he authored "A New Conservation Politics: Power, Organization Building and Effectiveness," which focuses on lessons of social movements ignored by many conservation practitioners and academic analysts, and further explains why facts alone do not persuade, or evoke caring or action on behalf of the natural world. Mr. Johns subsequently released "Conservation Politics: The Last Anti-Colonial Battle" in 2019, a book that tackles various thorny political issues, policy change, and successful social movements in an effort to assist conservation biologists, practitioners and nonprofits to become more effective. Earlier in his career, Mr. Johns served as a founding co-editor of New Political Science from 1979 to 1981 and co-founder and member of the editorial board of Wild Earth Magazine from 1991 to 2003. Since 2016, he has served on the editorial board of Biological Conservation. In addition to his contributions as an author and editor, he has offered presentations on various conservation subjects in the U.S., as well as Spain, Mexico, South Africa, and Canada. Before the pandemic caused the cancellation of many global meetings, he spoke about priority Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) at the International Marine Conservation Congress.
Mr. Johns studied at Portland State University where he earned undergraduate degrees in political science and anthropology in 1976. He subsequently attended Columbia University where he acquired a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1980 and pursued further studies in political science; he was admitted to practice law by the New York State Bar. Mr. Johns also participated in coursework at the East China Institute of Politics and Law in Shanghai and earned a certificate in comparative law at Columbia University.
In honor of his professional efforts, he was recognized with the Denver Zoological Foundation Conservation Award in 2007.
