In this capacity, she serves as a level two clinical dietician for Carilion Children's Hospital with a specialty in providing nutrition to patients in the neonatal intensive care unit. Since 2005, she has focused her efforts on the assessment of patient nutrition, making recommendations to change their diet as needed and breastfeeding promotion. She also plays a major role in the development and revision of feeding protocols and monitoring provider compliance with the protocols. Dr. Goldberg also is a non-tenured faculty member in the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
To remain aware of developments in her field, Dr. Goldberg is a member of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and its neonatology section as well as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and its Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group. Prior to her current role, she worked as public health nutritionist at the local and state level and as a professor at the undergraduate and graduate level at Jackson State University and the University of Wyoming.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Goldberg earned a Bachelor of Science in dietetics from the University of California Davis and a Master of Public Health in nutrition from Case Western Reserve University. She went on to attain a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Tennessee in 1990. Her most recent work includes published research on diagnosing malnutrition in preterm infants and neonates in peer-reviewed professional journals, and now is focused on developing resources for dieticians to put the indicators in practice.
