With nearly 40 years of excellence to his credit in radio media and 50 years of music performance, Mr. Gravely has found success as a band leader. In this capacity, he serves as the lead guitarist and vocalist for the Top Hat Blues Revue, which has garnered a reputation for excellence in the progressive electric blues music genre. Since forming Top Hat in 1996, he has had the opportunity to perform alongside numerous excellent musicians, in and out of the band roster. The current lineup consists of Mike Moody on drums and vocals since 1996, Rick Mitchell on saxophones and vocals since 2007, and Tony Sadler, who joined in 2022, on bass guitar. The group has released three albums, including Mr. Gravely's solo, all original "Norristown Boogie" in 2017, a party album titled "Top Hat Blues Revue Live" in 2014, and the band's first release, "Dancin' Blues" in 2002.
Mr. Gravely began his radio career as an evening disc jockey with WSVL radio in Shelbyville, Indiana. He continued working in all facets of the industry over the years, but shifted his focus to music with the formation of Top Hat. In 1999, he resumed working in radio as the morning host for WTRE radio in Greensburg, Indiana, rising to an executive role by 2010. He left his hosting position in 2019 and is presently working in sales for the station while also writing and recording radio ads.
Mr. Gravely found his passion for music while riding the school bus in the 1960s, during which time he listened to The Beatles and other groups on the radio. He received his first guitar at age 11 and began teaching himself the art of making music. By high school, he and his friends were booking and playing gigs. Mr. Gravely continued to hone his skills over the years, learning from other musicians and his many experiences playing music.
Mr. Gravely plans to continue writing, recording and performing with the Top Hat Blues Revue. He and his band are working on a new album containing several original compositions. Mr. Gravely also intends to transition into retirement from the radio business to spend more time with music.
