Additionally, Ms. McCanless has authored several books in the humor genre, including "Laugh Out Loud Funny Stuff: Brain Drippings, Book Two," in 2021.
Having written for much of her life, Ms. McCanless took to authorship after watching the mysteries of Agatha Christie on television, including "Murder She Wrote." She also read numerous books from her father, who was a publisher and would frequently bring them home to be reviewed. Besides her books, Ms. McCanless has been active as a freelance columnist for the Salisbury Post and a regular contributor to the Senior Savvy, The Saturday Evening Post, Sophie Woman's Magazine, and several other periodicals. She has also contributed reviews for books by other authors and has written numerous position papers on civic work that she has done in the past, mainly pertaining to family violence prevention.
Ms. McCanless has become known locally for her involvement in various pressing community issues, including an organization that focuses on child abuse and family violence prevention where she has served as the president. She also lent her time as a volunteer serving children and families who have been victims of abuse. Furthermore, Ms. McCanless has been recognized as a commissioned lay teacher.
An alumnus of Catawba College, Ms. McCanless received an Associate of Science in medical technology. Highlighting her writing achievements, she won the Mother Vine Award for Best Short Story in 2013 from Barnhills Books for her compilation of humorous columns, "Wyatt Earp, G.A.P. Pickle and Thoughts of Home." Ms. McCanless was also nominated for the International Woman of the Year Award for her contribution to the establishment of the Family Crisis Council of Rowan County in 1978.
